Still no comments on it but the last para in the article is interesting:

"With the information that's out there, there are, in my mind, only two likely scenarios explaining what happened: Either local officials were completely unaware that Ironman had been in discussions with Penticton behind its back (unlikely, given that Dave Christen, Ironman's regional director for Western Canada, has since told Pique the RMOW has been aware of the negotiations since the jump, though the RMOW said it found out in April), or the municipality signed a toothless contract that has potentially allowed one of Whistler's largest events to back out scot-free."

I can think of other scenarios that explain what happened. The author seems like he has an axe to grind with the municipality.

I wasn’t really clear. The article seemed to describe Ironman as both a minor event and one of Whistler’s biggest events.

It’s almost as if the landscapes of both Ironman and whistler shifted in different directions. and someone wanted to present their anger with RMOW.

I live in van. I love whistler. But whistler’s summer direction and Ironmans over the last 5 years have not been focussed on the same things. Even if Ironman had grown in the last 5 years, that would be the case.

I have had a place in whistler for 6 years and been in whistler during Ironman every time.

Everyone seemed to love it. It brought lots of money in the shape of fans and competitors. It was not annoying in any way except I suppose for the very short time you couldn’t DRIVE on 99 but you never need to drive anyway

You can just walk or ride your bike on the valley trail

Whistler is ideally set up for IM. Crap tons of cheap accommodations, beautiful, friendly other than pemberton locals.

I’ve never heard of anyone saying they didn’t like it. Obviously I was wrong?

You get BC day then Ironman then wanderlust then crankworks. It’s a great month of fun

my $ is on the day that God intended a Canadian Ironman race to be held, last Sunday in August.

I was wrong about Harper, too though...

Ahhh. Hence the comments on negative splits. Should be good for treadmill sales across the country.

Sorry if I missed it but was just wondering if the 70.3 will be left in Whistler?

Today if you're AWA

ETA: With the Aug 30 date, it appears to be an early qualifier for 2021 Kona. For those interested or fast enough for that kind of thing (not me!)

I've never done the Tri-Club early registration thingy before.I checked my profile in Ironman.com, seems like everything is good to go and I have the email preferences all turned on. So I guess I wait till Friday morning......when it will probably be at like Tier 4 ;)

Anyone think it will sell out pretty fast into the General Registration date on Monday?

Doesn’t seem like there is a 70.3 Canada anymore. At least it’s not mentioned at all for 2020

Wow! IM Penticton officially back! When I did it in 2001 and 2003 (my first 2 IM finishes) I lucked out and got in through the lottery. Man, I hope they keep the old course! Richter Pass and Yellow lake climbs kept things honest, and the downhill back into town definitely gave you a psychological shot in the arm prior to the run!

Someone mentioned about dryness and potential fire danger. Well, in 2003, there were huge fires! Flying into Kelowna it looked like pictures of flak from a WWII air raid! They changed the run to a 3-looper, and advised anyone with respiratory issues to sit this one out. They also made the swim 2 loops, as 1/2 their lifeguards were first responders, and they were out fighting the fires.

But the town came together and pulled it off- epic experience! I'd love to go back. I thought the AUG 30 date used to apply to IM in THAT year- does anyone have any inkling that it'll be for the following year? no matter, I'm going to race it either way...curious...and feeling that cool nervous buzz whenever I get the urge to sign up for another IM...

No, it's at tier 2 because AWA registration opened this morning. When I clicked on it two hours ago, it was still at tier 1. If you aren't AWA but in a WTC registered triclub, you may want to ensure your team contact member gets a link out because that's usually the next step in early registration.
