RIP Jean Vanier and happy Victoria Day

Jean Vanier died a bit over a week ago. A true Canadian hero. After already living a rather distinguished life in the 1960s he invited two intellectually challenged men to live with him in a town in France. This lead to the establishment of L'Arche a group of communities where disabled people live with "normal" people all over the world. Something like 150 of them. He did all sorts of great stuff in addition to that.

Also a shout out to Queen Victoria. Taking the crown at age 18 she ruled over the empire over which the sun never set for over 60 years. Had 9 children, apparently spoke English and German fluently and was good in Italian, French and Latin, and knew some Hindu and Urdu courtesy of an Indian secretary which whom she became friends. She was shot at 4 or 5 times and assaulted a few times as well. Amazingly the punishment for shooting at her ranged from 18 months imprisonment to something like 10 years transport. Seems those Victorians were in some ways a tolerant lot. Best of all another holiday weekend to go trout fishing!
