I feel like I'm getting into a silly argument. If you followed either rider you would know that both started their classics preparation during the CD session!! Particularly Wout but Matthieu also pre WC did a special endurance camp. Both riders have made a rather successful start

That was from before cyclocross season...I think you're misinterpreting my point, its amazing that both guys are making the transition of 60 min threshold efforts to super long road races at an elite level. Preperation for both seasons should obviously be different to some extent and being a cyclocross fan first, seeing either of both succeed is what I want, I don't have a particular favorite other than WVA riding a bianchi

CX is more repeated "VO2max level" efforts than sustained threshold. I believe this translate well for the classics, assuming they can conserve their effort until it's time to go full-gas.

Similarly, I'd expect better results from a CX rider in a classic than a TT, although Wout proved otherwise yesterday.
In XC and Road this year, MvDP has had a devastating attack that either gaps people or allows him to make a crazy bridge. Again, short(er), very high intensity effort that's similar to his CX tactic: Get the big gap, make them give up on you and then back the pace off a bit.
