Indy 70.3: Biggest fields?
it used to be wildflower most likely. but that race was not 6,000 people, more like 1,800 i think. the rest were the olympic distance, offroad, etc. educate me on which indy halves have the largest fields, in north america.

In before Fleck: Barrelman. They'll have over 1K racing.

The Patriot Half in MA generally has around 600 or so finishers. That's as big an independent half as I know of in the New England region.

so, would this be a fair way to categorize halves in this way? for north america?

Big Indy Halves:
Barrelman
Malibu half (most likely big)
Wildflower (assuming it returns)

Notable Halves that are gone (no current Half in that location):
Beach to Battleship
Timberman
Wildflower (currently, excepting what might happen with the new Lake San Antonio event)

Notable Halves converted to 70.3:
Milkman 70.3
Quasy 70.3
Maine 70.3
Eagleman 70.3
Lubbock 70.3
Superfrog 70.3

Licensed Halves (Not owned by IM, independently produced):
Atlantic city 70.3
Campeche 70.3
Monterrey 70.3
Cozumel 70.3
Los Cabos 70.3

have you done a poll on what people think their idea of the "perfect" field size is?

no i haven't. but that sounds like a pretty good poll to me. i think i'll do that for our next poll. how do you think i should word it? and do you think it should be specific to the half-distance or just in general?

Would you consider adding Redman to the notable list? Also, what criteria separates a big Indy half from a notable event?

I'd think it would be more useful if it was field size for a specific distance. For me, the longer the distance, the larger my "preferred" field size would be. Example: Big field at a sprint means really crowded and/or way too many waves and the nice short race turns into an all day affair...but for a full distance, I want lots of company out there suffering with me :)

I agree with this. I think for a sprint a small field is fine, as like you said a big field makes a sprint crowded, but it also works because even with a small field there's not enough time/distance for the field to completely separate so you would at least be seeing other athletes regularly. I think a small field in longer distance ends up with you out on the bike course not seeing anybody. I've heard that when people talking about HITS triathlons. I did a Rev3 half that was a bit lonely on the course. And then there's the other side with IM being jam packed especially on the bike.

So I agree the poll would need to be ideal size per race distance. And honestly, I'll have to think what I believe is the ideal at each distance as I haven't thought much about it.

Believe Beach to Battleship should be included in this section: Notable Halves converted to 70.3:

Did some editing above. I can't recall whether or not Tremblant is OOO or on a licensing agreement. I know they used to fall outside of the North American transfer program along with the licensed events.

Door County has been around that size as well. 571 finishers last year but 700+ in prior years.

Musselman has roughly 400 participants on an annual basis. Not necessarily the biggest but it's a damn fine race.

I have never raced it, but I think the Calgary 70.3 is still produced independently by a group of volunteers even though it is an IM event.

You need a license from Ironman. There has to be an organization to sign the contract.

Steelhead was an indy when Jan and I started it. Had 2,500 athletes the year I sold to IM. It's now an IM 70.3 with just over 2,000 - each year. This year will be race number 16 for Steelhead.

Milkman was an indy for one year, before being sold to IM. 1,500 as an indy and now over 2,000 as an IM 70.3.

IM now owns the three oldest long distance triathlons in the USA - SuperFrog - 41 years this year. Muncie - 40 years this year and Gulf Coast 38 years old this year!

Other 70.3's that are gone - Syracuse, Kansas, Branson, Boise, Providence, Mooseman and Timberman.

I kind of got the impression that Milkman was created with the sole intent of being sold to WTC given they’re current trend of putting a 70.3 in every place that has a 140.6.
