Great swimming technique video......"Hydro".....

The great Jonty Skinner...... A very interesting take.

."He calls the ideal freestyle technique “hydro freestyle”, and it is based on the idea of vaulting yourself over the water rather than pulling yourself through it. Skinner uses all sorts of toys and tools to teach this freestyle to his athletes and help them “feel” the technique."

I'm thinking this works a lot better for sprinting than for distance swimming.

I noticed the wrist weights. I'm tempted to pick some up and try relaxing my arms a bit more during the recovery.

"Anchor yourself to something that doesn't move then pull"

I don't get this. You are in the water and moving. Pretending will make a big difference?
I hate advice like this. So damn vague.

Visual imagery (aka pretending) is a tried and true method for getting athletes to improve. I actually like it. It’s similar to a cue that I use on myself, which is to set an anchor with the pulling arm and move my body past that. I’m not moving the arm back, I’m moving the body forward.

Ok, actually I have a swim clinic this weekend and it’s about Anchor and Finishing so let’s see.

So true. Too many don't realize the arm is not moving backwards, but one is holding that place and moving past it. There are some good videos that show that. I think this one visual cue may help me a ton, as I really related to what he said and the mistakes I make.

I love this quote from Coleman Hodges, the swimswam guy who interviewed Skinner. He's talking about the video from '76 showing Skinner breaking the WR, with link included below.

There are so many great things happening in this video: no goggles, lots of mustaches, only briefs, getting up on the blocks as your name is called, pre whistle starts off the blocks… we’re doing it all wrong nowadays
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig4dJiVNxVs
I guess goggles were still not very accepted in 1976, though I've read they were allowed in the '76 Oly. It was just you in your Speedo. :)
And one other thing: Everyone should watch this Skinner video b/c he is absolutely flying and taking around 50 strokes over the last 50 meters of the 100 free, with very little kick. Given that he swam the last lap in 25.1, that's about 120 strokes/min!!! Abso amazing!!!!
