Pretty amazing feat and quite a resume....

Joe is a formerTeamUSA triathlete teammate and a great guy. Obviously an amazing swimmer. His comments on the prep are pretty interesting.

Yeah. Got to be committed to do an Ice Mile.

Two folks from my tri club have done them - 1st guy is nuts, but fabulous achievement.

2nd person was a far more normal female. But quietly hard as nails. Only 2nd uk woman to do both Iron distance tris + ice mile.

There's a good reason why not many are on the list. It's tough !

I've been down to about 10C in a wetsuit and (a) my head felt it would explode, and (b) by about 1k I find my shoulders and arms have lost prob 60-70% of their power.

So in just a cozzie at below 5C , is SOO impressive. Serious Cred to anyone that tries.

We do wim hoff style "swims" 2 or 3 times a week where we basically jump in the winter water for 4 or 5 minutes without wetsuits. Around 2 degrees we use neoprene gloves and socks because sensitive hands and feet are the limiters but your skin feels frozen and its like you're wearing a wetsuit. I briefly put my head underwater but the cold is instantly painful and last time I literally felt my sinuses "crack". Overall everything feels great though.

So I can't even imagine this guy swimming 20 minutes or so in a speedo at 4 degrees... Pretty amazing!

Yea, I think it's quite impressive once one thinks more about it. Joe has done some pretty amazing swims though....

When the Y pool drops below 80 I get pissy. This? I have no words.

A mate and I tried to 'see how far into Winter' we could go carrying on with non wetsuit swims of at least 20mins/half a mile (whichever was first).

We made it to end October, last swim was at 8.5deg, so nothing like an ice mile. It wasn't that bad once in and swimming but the hour or two afterwards suggested we were in dangerous/hypothermic territory and we bailed at that point.

There are some folk who do swim through winter and I think regular acclimitisation makes a big difference.

I'm pretty good down to 52-3 ºF (about 11-12 C) with just a speedo and two latex caps for 1-2 miles generally.
In to the low 40's has got to really hurt.
The hardest thing about doing that for me might be finding water that cold.
I would have nowhere to train at those temps.

Kudos to anyone who does that.

I'd like to see Dan interview Joe, as he has a great triathlon pedigree too.

Trying to swim in super cold water seems like something that would be in an episode of Jackass. Seems more like a silly stunt than a challenge.

"To qualify, there are a number of safety rules that must be adhered to, including a medical examination by a doctor who has been told about the pending attempt. "

hahaha

i'd love to see that conversation w/someone's regular GP.

i'm also guessing that there were earlier regulations which required a checkup but which didn't specify that "told about" part.

one of the laziest ( in fact THE laziest) swimmer i have ever coached became an ice mile swimmer.
he had the "talent" for the sport at 5.10 feet and 16-18 stones .

I can see where you are coming from at the same time its not that easy and is a serious challenge for most.

I'm pretty sure I'd die in the first 30 seconds, when my testicles retract so hard they puncture my spleen.
