Yeah, long term health is probably more important than running. If I can’t run without a brace, I obviously should not be running.

Your story is very similar to mine. I am bone on bone in my right knee and left knee is about a 2 on the cartilage scale. So I have time before my left is done. I was viewing the impending doom of a knee replacement as the end of running as I knew it. However, there are outliers that are pushing the limits. It seems that most advice to not run or you are done running from the Drs. were anecdotal/quasi-anecdotal. I say that still with hesitation as what I have found is people saying that they are just trying to do more and more with very positive results with current technology. Meaning, no real science behind it. But, I have always been an envelop pusher and if and when I get that replacement I figure I have a new envelop to push.

Who ever was going to start that new thread on running with a new replacement is a genius and I look forward to watching that thread.

Have you tried hyaluronic acid injections? They worked for me for about 4 years.

About a year ago I had stem cell treatment and it's really helped with my arthritis/lack of cartilage. I still get the hyaluronic acid injections twice a year, but I don't think I'll need them when I'm due next.
Hi are you back running since the stem cell treatment ?

The stem cell really helped the arthritis in my knees. Am I running right now? Sort of, but that's more of an achilles things and an old meniscal tear.

I think the best proof I have for my knees betting better is that I can squat and stand up without pain. I can almost bend my knees far enough to sit on my heels, before the stem cell I couldn't bend my knees to an angle less than 90 degrees with out a lot of pain. I also don't have to go down steps one at a time and I can step up and off stools/chairs without having to grab hold of something a pull myself up/lower myself down...I usually hold something for stability, but I don't have to. I'm not jumping up and down on them without thinking about it but...

My last round of xrays and MRI show my knees are not nearly as arthritic as they were. there are still some days where they hurt, mostly when it is very humid, before it rains or when it's very cold. There is still a little pain in the morning and if I have been sitting with my knees bent for over and hour (saw Hamilton the other day....the end of Act 1 was okay, the end of Act 2 they hurt...but walking after was fine and the pain/stiffness lessened over the next hour).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I’m 59 and have articular cartilage damage in one of my knees. I am a life-long runner and completed an Ironman in each of the last 11 years. I have not been able to run for four months and I’m desperate. I got an Ossur unloaded brace today and am wondering what to expect.

How did it work? And how uncomfortable is it running? I just have minor arthritis due to me Meniscus removal 12 years ago in the right lateral compartment. I don’t have pain really running, my knee just kind of aches after. I am considering the Ossur Unloader One as a preventative measure to help slow down the wear of my cartilage. My medial compartment is good, so I think this might be a good option to try.

I got one and tried running in it one time. It was very clunky and did nothing to alleviate the pain. I could not imagine running in it for a long distance. It was over $500 and after running a half mile it was clear it wasn’t going to help. Luckily, I was able to return it. Six weeks ago, I had a partial knee replacement. We’ll see how that goes.

Look into Spring Loaded Technology; they make a newer type of unloading brace with that absorbs forces

Have you been able to run on your new knee? I ask because six weeks ago I got a partial knee replacement. Wondering what the future holds.

Update on my total knee replacement mentioned earlier in this thread a year and a half ago....

The surgeon told me I was 1 of 20 cases that gets sub par results.....limited range of motion, tightness, and dull pain.....it will not get better....I am 62...

I recently retired and I have done plenty of single track mountain biking, road biking, hiking, fast walking, nordic skiing, and swimming....

...just this spring I began running a bit on trails....1.5 to 3.0 miles about 1.5 times a week (6 times a month)...I wont run in the winter........I will likely run a trail 5k race with a slow pace, because its still an experience I want.....BUT......its enough......I can still run and feel that feeling.....its a far cry from what I was as a runner.....but it is enough....I am still a runner.

It was the Ossur One? I am getting one with my benefits so I don’t have to pay so worth a try for me.
