Polar Vortex River Swim - Video
Hey Slowtwitch, Eric Lagerstrom here!

We just put out a new Transition Four video, and I'm pretty excited about it. There's a river spot near where I grew up that I've been wanting to swim for several years, and I sort of got sick of waiting for "the right time" to go try it out and film it. So, we brought a thermometer, measured the temp at 46F and suited up!
My face has never been in so much pain, but it was sweet. Hope you enjoy:

I'll have a BTS vid coming out tomorrow that gives little more of the "Why" of the whole thing, but for now, I hope the vibe hits home.

Epic! That’s nuts!

Coldest I’ve been in (with a wettie) was mid 50’s, for a 400m-ish swim, and I lost function in my hands and feet. Can’t imagine what mid 40’s would be like.

Why no neoprene hood? I swam in 57 degree water in Lake Michigan with an Aquaman hood and a wetsuit and was fine, although booties would have made it more comfortable. That’s pretty rough with no accessories.

In all honesty, no hood because I couldn't find it! I just moved and some of my stuff is still half unpacked. I had to make do with the double cap.

Yeah.. I didn't make it long, only about 30 minutes.. I think with a neoprene cap and gloves, it would be do-able for a legitimate open water session. But..I think I'll hold off on round 2 until it at least hits mid 50's! Mostly I needed to blow off some steam and do something besides indoor laps.

Well, if you couldn’t find it that’s a good a reason to swim without it. Lol! Thirty minutes at that temperature is tough. Solid work!

Mid 40's...nice! Back in the day in Minnesota and Michigan, I've done that a few times. Looks like you had fun!

Some local cold-water swim group called me out for swimming in a wetsuit like a pansy. Can't catch a break!
