Turbo tax
I did my taxes with Turbo Tax, as I do most years, but this year at the very end they added a 40 dollar “filing” fee. Of course you’re gonna pay it, you really have no choice.

I think it sucks that they sprung it on you at the very end of the filing process.

Now, to make it worse, they are holding my refund until they process the fees I didn’t wanna pay to begin with.

Any lawyers wanna start a class action suit?

Is the 40 dollar filing fee for federal or state?

I always remember them filing federal for free and you pay a fee for state. Or you could just print off the state for free and snail mail it in.

With all of that said, I'm not surprised, Turbo tax has been known to slowly move the goal posts, such as pushing some things that were once on deluxe to premier etc.

I love in Florida, no state tax so it’s not that.

I’m not really sure what it was for. I think it was because I didn’t pay for it with my Apple ID. I’m not 100% sure.

What pisses me off most is they have my money and won’t release it to me.

Why not print the return and mail it? That's what I do. It may delay your refund for a bit (but, after the shutdown I suspect all tax return processing will be delayed).

Mine has already been processed and send toward my checking account. I’d have it I’d turbo tax wasn’t holding it.

So you’re saying the government got your tax retur and processed your refund before TurboTax could process your $40 filing fee?

Something doesn’t sound right there.

Wait your tax return goes to Turbo Tax... $40 filing fee...

Neither of these things is how Turbo tax works at least for me. Did you buy a bootleg copy of ebay?

Something smells very wrong. The fed sends the money to you not to turbo tax.

It hasn't been free for a few years now, $40 for fed is what they typically charge, then add more for state if you have to.

I just use it to check my numbers these days. I complete the process up to the filing point, then I go fill out the free online forms and make sure my refund numbers match then submit the free form. Doubles the work, but saves me $80-100.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the fed deposits your money into your account.

Are you potentially being phished? How are you seeing the $40 request? Email, on Turbo Tax, did you buy a CD or online version?

I downloaded the app from apple to my iPad.

This is the email I got:

Your refund is on its way
It should be automatically deposited in your account by the next business day.
What’s next:
Tax Products Group (TPG), a TurboTax partner, will process your refund by deducting your TurboTax fees from your federal refund and sending the remainder of your refund to you using the delivery method you chose. If you have already paid, please disregard the information about fees being deducted from your refund.

You can start checking your account tomorrow to see if your deposit has posted. Note: Some financial institutions may take 1 or 2 business days to post your deposit.

Yup sounds like your in the case the article mentions.
So you got an online version which did not include a free e-file. So its $40 to efile. It seems turbo tax offers 2 options, pay the $40 with CC and be done, or have the $40 (+$39.99 fee) taken out of your return. Which seems to be what you did. So now and I dont get how this works, but it was probably in some agreement you checked your refund comes to them they take their money and send the rest to you.

Why not just have your accountant do them for you?

There is tax on capital gains.

I didn’t claim any capital gains.

I took the easiest possible way. Filed with the standard deduction and just two incomes.

I just checked my account, the taxes are there.

If you filed with nothing but standard deduction TT shouldn't charge you...I did my son's taxes yesterday and filed standard - there was no charge.

Did he maybe ask Turbotax to send refund immediately.

For those who don't know because we would never do such a thing:

HR Block, Liberty Tax etc... do NOT make their money by doing taxes.

They make their money by doing a ta return, giving you your refund same day for a *small* fee and routing your refund to themselves.

Essentially a payday loan operation except the payor is the most secure payor in the world - the United States Government - and the fees aren't regulated so they are higher than payday type loans.

I've used TT every year for the last 5 or 6 years. It's just easier for me because all my info is already in the data base. I have never been asked at the very end to pay an extra 40 dollars to file, and I definitely have never had them HOLD my check for any amount of time.

It's all moot, I got my refund.
