XC skier Toenseth and his running ability
Quote | Reply
With xc skiing season in full swing, one of the most beautiful endurance sports in my mind, I learned that Didrik Toenseth was norwegian champ in XC running and he wanted to start in the european champs next week. But unfortunately the federation did not select him.

I find his running ability quite remarkable. Of course the skiers do a lot of running in the summer and they have a huge engine from all their training hours. But skiers are also bigger in the upper and lower body than running specialists.

I like that guys like him (and Blummenfelt or Andy Vernon) show that you can run very fast without being built like a bird and that more power and a big engine can be helpful. I think when we talk about running prowess one often focuses too much on being ultra light and forgets the strength component.

(When I got into running at 17 I fell into this trap and kept my bodyweight unnaturally low. When I took up cycling I grew much more muscular and now, at my heaviest, I run faster than ever.)

Strength per weight. Not strength. Not weight. Strength per weight. XC skiers have that in spades.

Yes, strength to weight. But I feel that in the running world a lot of people focus on the weight and forget the strength.

There are some elites (particularly from east Africa) who have a very narrow build and achieve an exceptional power to right ratio when very skinny. But if your skeleton is a bit wider, than I guess your ratio will be much better when you just train hard and let your body develop how it wants. No excess body fat but also no calorie restriction and dieting.

My point as well. Focus on the balance. We see these super skinny runners (and climbers on the bike) and don't realize how strong they are.

The largest broadcaster in Norway NRK has now a 45 minutes program about Tønseth's approach to training and his use of science.

You can get a lot of the information from this article (use Google translate)

Thank you very much. Looks interesting. I will try google translate.

I guess I should join my brother who is currently learning norwegian. (We have a cousin from norway)

Didrik Tønseth ran a 10 000m on the track today in 29.48.5
Not bad for a xc-skier.

Wonder how many LD triathletes that can get under 30m on the track?

You sure?

Seems like he did a 32.09 2 days prior to the race you're referring to but I can't find the results where he did 29.48.

Obviously thats not world class. But for a guy who does not even need to run during his main sport a sub 30 10k is impressive. I can't think of too many long course guys doing that either. Frodeno could in his ITU days and might still do it if he gave it a serious try. Gomez is back in ITU now. Langes personal best is something over 30.
