Swim Tether

I fully realize this has probably been posted before and I know what the "search" function is, but I am unable to locate it.

Going to be doing a lot of traveling for the upcoming 5-6 months and I won't be able to swim at a normal pool, and need to locate a swimming tether. There is a few solid ones that clip onto the ladders that hooks onto your feet and doesn't "pull you down".

I can't remember what it's called and I'm looking for one, does anyone remember what this one or one similar like it is called?

TYR makes a resistance belt that you wear at the waist also.

My personal preference is for having the tether attach to a belt around the waist. I found having anything attached to the feet or ankles to be uncomfortable and interfered with kicking.

If you can get by the circa 1980s website videos, this one is one that is actually designed to work properly with most any stroke because it does indeed connect to the bottoms of your feet:

Did you see on GTN they used a surfboard tether

They said it didn’t effect the stroke very much. It was attached to one ankle

I use this tether in my home pool which fastens around the ankles.

I don't kick much while using it (sometimes use a pull buoy too) so it doesn't bother me to be around my ankles.

This has a safety strap sewn in to prevent injury if the tubing snaps... it happens, it's not pretty.

I constructed one from bungy-cords from a petrol station once when I was staying in a hotel with a pathetically sized pool. Went round the waist and up to the handrail of the pool. As has been noted, not the most fun experience, deathly boring and doesn't feel natural either as you aren't actually moving through the water.

Cheers, Rich

I use them for resistance work, not as good as a pulley or a power rack but it still helps.

Getting this post back up! I've been thinking about making some sort of setup for my pool I have at home (I own a gym/spa) which is 20x10 metres which is plenty enough to swim in but I've got the feeling it lacks distance for some intervals. I'm an okay swimmer (under 30' in HIM) and when I get to a 50m pool or open water I lack the upper body strength to endure those distances. I'm trying to qualify for the WC 70.3 next year in beginning of may in Aix 'd Provence which is pretty early so Its hard to get some open water sessions in and 50m pools aren't open here in The Netherlands.

TLDR: Is it beneficial to get a Swim Tether of some sort so I can train 'longer distances' so to say. In my 20m pool I most times just get to swim 12m due to pushing off etc. Or is it not that great and say just swim more in a 20m pool?

It is a tool that will help if you can take it. I'm currently overseas and the only pool I have access to is 12m in length and I got a tether. I've usually love swimming but I've only been able to make myself swim once a week at this point.

You'll ride a bit lower in the water than if you are actually moving, but I've found using a pool buoy just about eliminates this.

I would advise having some music to help get through the monotony. I like the finis duo but there are a lot of options out there now.
