$ / calorie game
We’ve all played the $ / gram savings game with our bike bits.

Just the opposite...lowest $ / calorie food you can buy ?

I have a friend who swears it’s ice cream. Low cost and high calorie count.

Got others ?

Haha, I first played this game 11 years ago when a friend and I rode the length of the UK (~1000 miles) as poor students! In terms of pre-packaged foods that you can buy from a convenience store, the ones that always won were small american-style cookies. Just looked them up and at current prices ~£1.10 per 1000 kcal, although as with most stuff like that in the UK supermarkets, if you wait until it's on a promotion it would be well under the £1 mark.

As for actual foodstuffs, I made a spreadsheet earlier in the year as I tried to switch to more "real" nutrition on the bike, mostly to evaluate nutritional composition, but it includes prices as well. In UK supermarkets, all types of flour and sugar, as well as oats and dried pasta just about scrape under the 30p per 1000 kcal mark. Unfortunately it doesn't include ice cream for obvious reasons, but I don't think even the cheapest supermarket ice-cream would beat that mark!

Rice and beans for the win!

You can actually live on that and be healthy. Ice cream, no way.

I used to know a "broke" pro bike racer. He swore by generic brand duplex cookies- in the 2 lb. package.

Now this is a worthwhile game. Taking the thread in the direction of where can I eat out to consume the most calories per $.

Usually go to Wendy's after a workout:

Free senior drink = unlimited calories.
Almost free tag Frosty ( paid $2 at the beginning of the year for the tag good for one year)
Usually two items from the value menu like two crispy chicken and mustard with extra pickle, mayo and lettuce at no extra cost.

So for $2.77 including tax I get two sandwiches, drink and something like ice cream.

If I wasn't a senior citizen, I would get their 4x4 with tag frosty, drink, fries, sandwich and 4 chicken nuggets with sauce. Unlimited calories again.

Indoor Triathlete - I thought I was right, until I realized I was wrong.

Generic poptarts and milk are both pretty good bets when you get sick of spending ALL that extra money on the water and heat you need to make rice and beans edible.

Hostess fruit pies are ~$1.00 for 470 calories

Can be purchased at many gas stations when stopped for fluids.

I had no idea. I'm getting hungry....

Reminds me of back when I lived in my truck and raced bikes. Burger King had $1 Whoppers for awhile. I ate at Burger King a lot.
