IM Santa Rosa 70.3 - Water Temp
Locals... Is this thing going to be wetsuit legal or illegal? I need to know if I'm buying a swimskin or not.

Cheers

Highly unlikely is will be a non-wetsuit swim...

The full was conveniently 76.1 degrees. The reading likely wont be higher than that no matter the temperature.

For what it's worth (not much), I just spoke to a local who described the lake as "hot" in his sleeveless wetsuit. So, I'd at least be mentally prepared for the possibility of non-wetsuit. If you think you might need a swimskin in the future, might as well buy one now just in case.

Safe to assume it won't cool down much between now and race. I'll bring my swim skin just in case.....

The water temp is currently over 76.1 ... i'd be prepared to swim without a wetsuit.

If you want to monitor air temp look at weather in Cloverdale ... it is a hot pocket up there and the swim is in a cove that runs warmer than the remainder of the lake

I would change that to highly likely ;-) ... air temps for Cloverdale the next 10 days straight is mid- 90's to 100 degree's.

A fishing report at Lake Sonoma has the lake surface temp at 70* this week... Anyone know what’s correct ?

This is My first 70.3 and my one other tri (Olympic) was in a lake and I did the swim in 30 min with a wetsuit. I’m somewhat new to swimming and a little nervous that this might not be wetsuit legal. Worth investing in a swimskin ?

There is ZERO chance it is 70 degree's ... considering current water temp is 76-78 and Cloverdale (where the lake is) is forecasted for 100+ degree's today and between the low 90's and 100 deg the next 10 days

If one were to ask my advice I'd advise to plan on a non wetsuit swim ... it's 1900 meters. Swimskins provide value and its good to have in arsenal of equipment choices

Question for you re: spectators. Did the race last year with my lady, but this year it'll be just her racing. What's the best plan for spectators? Is it possible to be at the swim start and then also be back in time for bike finish for faster folks? I don't remember there being much parking, if any, at the swim for spectators/cars.

If you wanted to be at T1 in the morning AND make sure you get back for Pro's / Faster AG's off the bike I'd leave after the pro's start (or sooner). If you do not leave at that point you will be there until final swimmers get out of the water

That's good to know and I appreciate the reply. So if I drive there early enough I will be able to park? Santa Rosa is a great race, wish I was swimming and running so I could race! (sort of)

Haha ... Yeah if you get there early and are able to park past T1 you can drive out (assuming you leave early as well)

Dave -

Just rode the back end of the course and one of the roads, Willowside I think, is unpaved. Currently requires half a mile of cyclo-crossing!

Is that supposed to be done this week or are the organizers looking at a re-route?

Thanks!
