Since a sponsored athletes review is a little biased. Here my take after owning a SLX and P5.

Aerodynamic. P5
I have a P5 three with a Tririg brake and it tests faster than my SLX on the velodrome every time.

Braking. P5
Power and adjustment is equal but if given the choice I’ll choose standard mount brakes. They are easier for recabling and never have to worry about not finding a small proprietary parts.

Storage/hydration. P5
I found out I do not like drinking from a straw. I want two standard bottles and bento box for gels. This is not a clean set up on the SLX. If you put a BTA bottle and remove the hydration on the SLX the bento will be out in the wind. I guess I could run a BTA over the integrated system... but prefer the simplicity of BTA and BTS bottle. Spare I just put under the seat/inside the bento box so the storage on the SLX is nice but not needed in my set up.

Traveling. P5
Take the bars off and secure them to the frame. Put the bike in any type of bag or hard case I wish. The SLX.... start looking for one of the huge ridiculous cases that allow the bars to remain mounted.

Warranty. P5
Obviously both are limited to their terms and conditions but Cervelo is lifetime vs 2 years.

Product Support. P5
I can call Cervelo today and get any part on the bike. I can’t say that for Canyon. Maybe one day.

Looks. Speedmax
It has cleaner lines and looks fantastic.

In my option the P5 three is still the gold standard.

Although I have not "tested" the bikes on a velodrome, I agree with most of these points. That being said, there are so many "superbikes" now in the market, that I am not sure if the P5 is still the gold standard of the bikes. (P5X is definitely NOT it)

Despite the P5X testing better in EVERY test I’ve seen so far???

I’m not some P5X fanboy but it’s by all accounts it’s a super fast, if not the fastest, bike on the market. Not sure why people really don’t want to embrace what has been a fact so far. Price and aesthetics aside.

Definitely not a P5X hater, but maybe your last two sentences are the reason why it's so unpopular.

Also, when you bring a new (not really) disruptive design to a market dominated by many brands whom are barely different from each other, you should expect some resistance. That's just human nature.

When it got difficult to get the Speedmax CF SLX, I remember I secured a P5X Ultegra at a bike shop, as a plan B. All I wanted was a superbike, P5X was my consolation bike if the Speedmax didn't happen.

I want to add:
Fitting yourself onto the bike. Speedmax.
The geometry of the P5 limits a lot of people who are not long legged. You will not get into a long and low position on a high and short bike.

That’s funny! I thought I would hate the saddle. I have been cycling since I was a kid (now 63) and have been doing tris since ‘81, and I love the saddle!

Assuming you were saying I am "a little biased"..........
Just to correct you here, I have been transparent in everything I do, and every company I have worked with/partnered with/been sponsored by I have been a paying customer to start, that goes with Canyon as well.

Aerodynamics- Was your P5 setup exactly the same as the SLX, I would go out on a limb to say no, so you aren't comparing apples to apples here. And the velodrome is not giving you real world data, someone can correct me if I am wrong, but you aren't getting the full yaw swing you would see in the real world, or more importantly where you will mostly be riding.

Braking- I think the SLX brakes are much better, at least in terms of sleakness and how the cover is cleaner. I will agree with braking power seems to be very comparable to the maguras.

Storage/Hydration- Yeah, sorry you got this one wrong here. Or we can agree to disagree that it is personal preference. And FWIW, running the integrated setup is faster, or at least it was for me........

Traveling- Yeah, slightly easier on the P5. It really depends how mechanical savvy you are. I have traveled with the bike both ways, base bar off and strapped to bike (didn't like that as much because I run a lot of stack and the pads were pushing a bit out on the bag). I now use the primere box and have no issues with it.

Product Support- You are correct with your statement, although I will say Canyon Customer Service has been great, just unable to deliver on parts request. Seems to be a global Canyon issue, and not just a North America thing.

Overall solid review on your part, and agree with most of what you said.If you want to think I am biased, that is fine, but think my transparency on things stands for itself around here. You will be hard pressed to find many pros that have went from paying customers, to sponsored athletes and really willing to give you honest feedback, at least that has been my experience.

I slide the CO2 and chuck into the top tube and the tire I stuff down the seat tube with a bit in the top. :)

Lately I bought a Canyon Speedmax, but at that time the saddle cage mount of Canyon was not available anymore at their website.

Does anyone have suggestions for saddle bottle cage setup? I prefer a single bottle set up.

Thanks.

My trusty steed. Will sell it as have to take a year off and no point in just letting it sit around.

Anybody know if the Di2 on the CF SLX 8.0 is Bluetooth/Ant+ compatible? I’ve tried pairing it to the E-tube app on my phone as well as my Garmin 520, but neither works. I’ve watched videos on how to put Di2 in discovery mode, but it doesn’t seem to work. Is this user error or a hardware issue.

Also....Love the bike, but damn, those Ergon pads get pretty slippery once you start sweating.

I also have the CF SLX 8.0 and, I can tell you it's not user error.

There are 2 different Di2 models out there. Wireless and non-wireless. The 8.0 comes equipped with NON-Wireless Di2. Good news is, you can but the wireless unit and make the upgrade. I chose not to, since I do not justify spending the extra money to have one more (Not relevant during races, IMO) metric on my Edge 520.

Brad,

Thanks for starting the thread. I'm getting back into multisport after some time away, I am currently on my original P3C (2006) and am very loyal to the brand as I have both a Cervelo TT and road bike. I have been considering whether or not I want to go with the P5 of switch to the Speedmax next year. I am very interested to hear your thoughts and opinions on the two bikes as you've ridden both bikes. Some of the questions I have are:
1) which bike is lighter (I know the ST crowd will crucify me for this question due to the aero trumps weight, but i'm a smaller rider)
2) I have heard that putting together a P5 is quite involved, any differences here with the Speedmax?

Once again looking forward to your thoughts on the matter.

Eric

relk, nice looking ride. I have a CF SLX as well. Only had it a couple months and having trouble getting comfy on it. Looks like you've elevated the arm pads beyond stock. What did you use? Just looking - the extensions look like 51 Speed Shops, are the armpad spacers from them as well.... thx for any info

Do you have the tilt kit? The tilt kit also makes the pads narrower and adds a few cm of stack (and tilts the cockpit about 7-10 degrees depending on which bars you use). It's a must have imo. I also got some shim-spacers (3d printed) do place on top of the tilt spacer to further tilt the pads, have not decided if I should race with that as well. It's very comfy however.

Do you guys have to put 'tampon strings' on them, so you can fish it out again?! =)

No I just turn the frame upside and shake until they all fall out!

mortysct Didn't know a tilt kit existed for this bike. Have looked on the U.S. accessories website but it doesn't show one. I have been thinking of coming up with something of my own i.e.(3d printed) but don't really have that option right now. Only have about 300 miles on her right now but can tell I'm not gonna be able to make this setup fit me the way it is. Definitely need to raise the cockpit. Plan on giving the Canyon customer serv. folks a call today. Will keep you posted. Thx for the info.

We're still catching up getting a ton of small parts to our website... but we do indeed have the angled spacer kit in stock and available for the Speedmax SLX. IIRC, they are $20 a set. For reference this is the same used by Patrick Lange in Kona last year.

To get hold of one, call our team at 833.226.9661 and you can just order it over the phone.
