I raced a local sprint on Sunday and am in the 50-55 age group. I had for me a solid race but was stunned to see a guy in my age group post an amazing time. The race was 500 yard swim, 13 mile bike and 3 mile run. The guy finished second overall out of about 120 and went 57:xx, with a sub 8:00 swim, 31:xx bike and 18:45 run. Those seem like very fast splits for our age group, but maybe I have not seen many really fast guys in 50-55.

Is that result considered fast for a male 50-55? I was impressed especially with that kind of bike and run combo.

Those times (at least the bike and run ones; Richard Blaine Don't Swim) are fast, but perfectly normal fast. I ride faster than that, and run a bit slower, and don't consider myself exceptionally gifted. For reference: there's a guy in my running club who ran a 5KM PR at age (I think) 52 of 17:51. And while he's a freak of nature, there's a lot of daylight between 17-high and 18-high.

I'm in the 50-54 (not 50-55) and that's normal for a sprint.

But also remember you can't really measure the swim and with the bike distances are often mis-marked, there is wind, hills, road conditions, etc..

And lastly runs are often not accurate. From my experience they often say "5K" and it's usually less than that. I did a similar sprint this weekend and the '3 mile run' was 2.8 miles.

That is outlandish. That would run away with the overall win in races I have seen. I routinely win and podium my 50-54 AG in local sprints. Typical winning times are around 1:15-ish.

I'm 51 and consider myself an OK runner, on a flat course a good run for me will be 20:30 to 21:30. I know several guys my age that can run 2 to 3 min faster.

Yes that is fast. This weekend two guys in my age group (50-55) went 1:11 and I thought that was pretty fast. The swim was 800m though and the run a legit 5K

That’s fast, but not “supernaturally” so.

I know several guys 50+ who can throw down those sorta splits, when healthy.
(I am not one of them).

Its fast, but not out of this world for that AG. Hell, H20fun here runs almost that fast and he is 62 I think. The swim time is not really fast if accurate, but could be transition times in there too. And 31+ for that ride is pretty in line with good guys in that AG. We had a local sprint and a 53 year old got 2nd overall. But I know him and he is an ex pro that has kept fit.

And those comparing other race times to this, forget about it. Sprints are all over the place, and usually not exactly half an olympic distance. The race we had was about a 1k swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run. What we like to call equilateral triathlon. Each event takes the same amount of time for someone with the same proficiencies. And this one works out just about perfect..Sorry I had to miss it, but Slowman rocked 2nd in the 60+!!

note that the run was 3mile, not 5k; probably you also run faster than him

I did the Triathlon England Sprint Championships a couple of weeks back in M50-54. In your money 800yds swim (750m), 13 mile bike, 3.1mile run and returning 1:09:22 - S 13:58, B 32:39, R 19:33. Really though this was a decent effort apart from the swim but it got me 17th in M50-54.

I outbiked the top 3, but went backwards in every other discipline; consoled myself with the thought that most of them would have been short distance specialists doing their 'A' race. I would have needed <12:00 swim and <18:30 run to trouble the podium.

Great standard and depth to the field.

Results from an HFP Racing sprint tri in Ohio I did on Sunday - https://triregistration.com/...sNew.php?raceid=2779

Nine 50+ guys in the top 17 and a 61 year old was second overall with a 1:06 for a standard sprint distance (750m, 20K, 5K). There was also an Oly race, which the majority of the fastest in attendance raced.

The swim was likely a bit short. I don't wear a GPS watch so don't know the exact distances.

A buddy of mine in SC who is 52 is usually top 3 in the SC circuit and he won the sprint two weekends ago in Greenville. Beat a pro too. Dude is a beast. His run times have slowed a bit, but no one is out biking JB.

And last Thanksgiving I PR'd my 5k at 18:06 on a hilly course and thought cool I'll win masters at 42. Nope some 50 year old ran a 17:16. Seriously?

Fast but realistic. Speaking from experience, I did a sprint last year at the age of 50 with a 500M swim, 12.1 mi bike and 3.3 mi run with a bike split of 29:29 and run of 20:16. I was injured and had not done but a couple weeks of run training last year prior to the race. My swim is pretty average, but was still good enough for the OA win in 63:41. I'm healthy this year and hope to go sub 19 on the run with a similar bike. I've already run sub 19 twice this year for 5K in training bricks. Been swimming more too, so maybe I'll be fortunate again this year. Ok, done patting myself on the back.

I wanna go fast!

But he didn't run a 17-18. That is a very different world than a 6:15 pace (which is a 19:25 for 5K or 18:45 for 3 miles). There are so many variables here in play. How many people raced? Was he 2nd of 500 or 2nd of 150? Was your wave behind others? If so, does there's an inherent benefit of drafting and sling-shotting past others. Hilly course? Flat? Hot/Cool?

If you're looking for validation that he had a fast race, provide a link to the results. Or something that puts those times into perspective.

I did a sprint du last weekend and a 57 year old won.

1.7 mile run 10:14
10 mile bike 24:36
3.3 mile 2'nd run 20:36

After the race he proceeded to tell a few of us the race was to short. He was just warming up....

i have made the podium at ITU Worlds 5 times in the last 4 Championships i have raced (13,14,15 and 17) and i am 51 so consider myself a FOP racer and i would normally do the following on an accurate course - swim 10 mins, bike 30 mins run 18 mins. I ran 17.26 for 5k on the track last year and my run is my weakest discipline. At Ironman Weymouth in 2016 i lead out the swim which i think makes me the oldest guy to lead out an Ironman swim. Age is just a number so train consistently and keep injury free and the times will come down!

Well I am not even 30 yet and after reading this thread I am going to quit triathlon and focus on something that apparently 55 year old do not do anymore - like reading or knitting.
