Swim & Bike near Beacon, NY area???
Quote | Reply
I'm heading to my cousin's wedding in Beacon, NY this Friday. I'd love to be able to swim Friday morning and get in a nice ride on Saturday morning. I've tried looking for swimming options, but the best I could find was a fitness center with a 15yd pool nearby. Not sure about roads nearby, but could take my trainer along and probably bike in the hotel fitness room or outside in the parking lot.

Any help from those that live in the area would be appreciated?

Not sure about swimming, but you are very close to Bike Route 9 which is used by pretty much everyone that lives in the NYC metro area

Check out my Strava ride from March - I turned around very close to Beacon - you could head south on 9D (or 9 if you drive to Fishkill), cross the Bear Mountain Bridge, and then either continue on 9W south or go up Bear Mountain for a little challenge.

Is that a bike path or a road? Sounds like a good option if I want to forgo a long trainer ride in a hotel gym or parking lot!

It's a road - most of it is in decent condition and has wide shoulders, and it's labeled as a cycling route. It's the go-to route for cyclists coming out of the city headed north. If you make it south enough on 9D (about 15 miles) to the Bear Mountain Bride you'll be treated with some pretty nice scenery.

If you want a challenge climb Bear Mountain (https://goo.gl/maps/fV6DVrMZU2s) - usually takes about 20-30 minutes and on a clear day you can see NYC.

"Up Bear Mountain for a little challenge"

Yes that's what I'd recommend;

Over the Bear Mountain Bridge to 9w South;
1/2 mile to the entrance to Bear Mountain;
connector takes you past the carousel onto Seven Lakes Drive.
Start climbing and bang right up Perkins Memorial Drive.
From 9w to the top is about 2.75 miles of climbing.
The return to 9w (after the Perkins switchbacks) is a blast.
Enjoy!

^^^ I agree with this guy.

One point of note. You'll be riding south on 9D and then take a right to go across bear mountain. Don't be tempted to turn left onto route 202! It's scenic but the roads are thin, there are NO shoulders and cars move quickly. Just to be clear, it is not on the route that stillrollin is suggesting, but if you want to create extra mileage somewhere it's much better to go and ride seven lakes drive and the surrounding roads than route 202!

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe a couple times up and down the mountain! I'm doing the Mt. Washington climb in August, as well as Quassy and IMLP, so riding hills in training sounds like a fun idea.
