Wheel preference for XS Tactical Triathlon Bike
Quote | Reply
Just hoping for some in-put.

I have been working on an XS Tactical Triathlon bike which will be available around March 2018. It's time to specify the wheels that will come as standard equipment. For those 5'5" and below or coaches that work with athletes looking for better geometry on a smaller bike - what size wheels would you like to see on the bike?

1. 88/88
2. 88/50
3. Disc/50
4. something else?

The bike will have 650 wheels.

Thank you.

I appreciate your in-put.

My $0.02 would be the 88/88 option. If I never came on ST and didn't care, I'd opt for the disc/50 choice. But now, I'm too slow and therefore not worthy of owning a disc any longer...sigh...

I am not sure how deep 88 is, and I know even less about wheels in general, but I know that a 650 wheel is about 10% smaller in diameter than a 700, so wouldn't an 88 650c be, in practice, about 10% deeper than a 700? IOW, proportionately more carbon relative to "empty" space in the center. I don't know if I could hold a front wheel that deep where I usually ride.

I am super excited about the possibility of this bike, although the specs suggest it may still be too tall for those of us with PadY in the 400s. I am going to try to find you in Kona (cheer squad, not fast enough to be racing) to hear more about it.

My vote would be for a 88/88 or an 88/50.

I am excited to see what options you pull together on the Xsmall. My current ride will be replaced this season and my 650 options are so limited.

Thank you. I'm leaning toward 88/50 based on the PM's. I have a few weeks before I need to make a decision.

Great for training and racing.

It depends what end of the spectrum the bike is pitched at. High end probably 88/50.

However, don't forget to factor small female riders weigh waaaaaaay less than your average triathlete and tend to be affected more by wind. I would never even consider a disc wheel but that is just me 0.02

If it is lower end of the spectrum those wheel choices feel too high.

Have made a huge assumption that majority of riders on xs 650 bikes will be under 5'3" and hence female.

Disc works fine in windy conditions. In fact, I find it more stable than my Zipp 404. It's the front end that gets pushed around in wind, not the back.

Thank you all for your PM's and forum posts. I appreciate the in-put.

I have specified the XS Tactical with an 88 mm rear wheel and 50 mm front wheel. I will also produce an 88 mm front wheel for those that want another option.

What about a disc? My wife would be a prime candidate for this bike (slammed on the smallest Felt IA). A 50mm front is probably as deep as she'd dare as an only/default front wheel, but she rides a disc with no problems.

I looked at the disc (which would require another mold) and 80% we surveyed wanted an 88 ish rear. So we ended up doing 88's for front and rear as well as 50 for front. If I get enough requests for a 650 disc I can open a mold and have it produced.

I have no shame. Even if I don't have enough speed to warrant it, I would be interested in 650 disc as well-cool factor counts for something. You are really getting my attention with what you're doing here ;-)

Can't wiat to see the bike. I ride a disc with no problem-i just keep an eye on the expected wind speed for race day.

For the production of the XS Tactical - we ended up with an "all of the above" approach.

disc, 88, 50 mm rear - all new molds - 25 mm wide 650 c

50, 88 mm fronts - all new molds - 25 mm wide 650 c

XS bikes have all passed testing and are in production.

decal choices (red, pink, blue, white).

Nicely done, I look forward to seeing the end result.

My wife (163 cm) took gold at the 2010 ITU Age Group WC's in Budapest, riding a 51 cm Felt frame with 650C Zipps - 40mm at the front and a disc at the back. It was a superfast, flat course and she said that the setup was ideal.

Good luck!

Wheelbuilder tells me that Zipp and ENVE are now both out of the 650 market. Next year I am going to do some fit homework to see if I can get on the XS Tactical.

FYI, my local bike shop, Pro Cyclery in Las Vegas, custom built me a set of training wheels with spokes that matched my bike. 650 wheels are still out there, but it is getting harder to find them. Hed made my 650 trispoke wheels and I had a 4 month wait while the factory made them by special order...
