ST Virtual Swim Meeting April-June Edition
Quote | Reply
OK, so because of the last virtual swim meet thread, I decided to take the plunge and do the first swim meet of my life.

Last thread's official events were 50m of fly, breast, back, free, plus 100 IM. I never got out to do them last month, but did them yesterday in prep for doing all of those events in a small swim meet today...my times were 43, 59, 57, 40 and 1:42 respectively, but today, I'll do them for real (plus 100 free) and try not to sweep last place in my age group at the meet AGAIN!!!!

Monty, Jason, can you guys decide what the official events are for April. Last quarter it all diverged and people were posting about all kinds of events (including myself). The only rule is no 800m free and 1500m free since we effectively do those in triathlon. I'll post times in whatever they are, even if you make me do a 200m breast or back stroke (YIKES)!!! Jason, if you pick 200m fly, then you have to come out of retirement do it too!!!

Hell no, I'm not doing 2fly. Leave that for crazies like Gary and RealAB.

Official events this month are 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 back.

2back is nearly as painful as 2fly anyway.

I think we had 50 free last month, so we have 100 breast, 200 back.....one more?

We're gonna have repeats in the 50's, there's only 4 to choose from. And I want to swim a fast 50 free this month, so it's totally self serving.

OK fine, I will have an official 50 free time by this afternoon. Probably working on that 200 back and 100 breast are good things if I want to improve my 400IM!

So maybe the 100 fly + 200 back + 100 breast + 50 free descending intensity set is what I need to do to improve my 400IM anyway! I think there is a lot of back and breast low hanging fruit if I want to climb out of the age cellar at the next swim meet.

OK from today i had PB's in the events for last month all scm from wall push as i cannot dive

100 free 1:26
50 fly 42
50 back 51
50 breast 56
50 free 39
100 IM 1:40

I beat or hit all my seed times. Only one that i would have liked to go half a second faster was 100IM. All of these from wall push.

OK i will start working on this month's 200 back and 100 breast

I'll join in:

I've got a 31 free from yesterdays masters practice and I did my best 100 breast on my own today at 1:35. Everything is SCY.

My breast stroke is funny in that I have no modulation. I can swim a 23s 25 well, 35 to 40% of the length underwater - seven strokes to the wall, but if I try and push the pace any faster I just end up moving around more water but not going any faster. I bet on my 100 I went 23,23,23,25. My last length had a short underwater and I was an extra stroke to the wall.

My best 50 br in practice is 46 - essentially the same pace for my 100. I'd really love to go under 45s for the 50. Once place I might find that time is in the transition from arms at your sides to streamline just before the first br kick. I can feel a major loss of speed right then and I don't carry much momentum into the first stroke.

For the 100 breast, I was watching some Kitajima underwater after watching Mike Brown this weekend (he was at the swim meet as a guest doing a fun IM with Yannick Lupien and others). In any case, it seemed to me that Mike's knees were actually deep in the water just before going into his kick.

If I look at this video of Kitajima:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDaLdqQwPco

His knees are not 90 degrees relative to torso before the kick but more like 120 (maybe even tighter). It also seems because of the knees being deeper at the end of his pull just before he pikes down after the kick into the glide phase, he ends up having to arch his back less? Will try this a bit this week before giving it a try. The goal will be to break 2 minutes. Ideally get this down to 1:50 this month. Maybe that is a dream since my 50 is only 56 high (no dive start). Let's see.

Oh, I know. But 2back (for me, anyway), is the least worst 200 in the strokes. They're all bad, but 2breast is agony. 2fly is agony. 2back is hell, but only about the 6th circle of hell.

Have fun at Nats! I'm registering for 70.3 Muncie tonight, that's my road trip this year.

Breaststoke is weird in that pushing harder does not make you go faster... I am looking for a 38 high/39 low 50 Br split in my 200m IM at Nationals. Working on managing the oxygen deficit coming out of the turn.

Yesterday's Anaerobic Capacity set

2 Rounds ( Fly ) 25m pool

100 @ 3:00
2 x 75 @ 2:15
3 x 50 @ 1:30
200 easy

Target pace for the set was 16.25/25m on the tempo trainer... I was under that pace for the whole set except the 2nd round 100 and was probably still under a 1:05.5. All reps were from a push.

next week will be

3x
125 @ 3:45
75 @ 2:15
2 x 50 @ 1:30
150 easy
or

4x
125 @ 3:45
75 @ 2:15
100 easy

I am leaning towards the 4x version to get more of the slightly long reps at pace.

OK to honour this months, events as part of today's swim I did my first every 200 back....well it went like this:

200 back, legs dying at around 125m, then transition to 100 breast almost died on the first pull out then started getting going at my tourist pace, transitioned to 100 free (kind of recovered) and launched into a 100 fly to immitate the piano feeling at the end of a 200 fly.

In a weird way, I enjoyed doing that and I covered all the required events for this month's virtual swim meet all in one go! I will do them separately this week and time them for a benchmark and then try to time them again by end of month for progress.

Swam at a meet on saturday.

50 breast - 33.15 which I was rather disappointed with since I did a 32.2 last year and I felt more prepared for breast this year
800 free - 9:47 which I'm really happy with. Bo, you would only lap me once! ;)
100 breast - 1:16 which was just meh

Was that at Fredericton? I wanted to go, but didn't have the time. Wife and I bought a camping trailer a couple of weeks ago and we spent the weekend cleaning, fixing up, and outfitting it.

Yes, Fredericton. I had forgotten how shallow that pool was. Blocks seemed like they were barely above the water! I spent two years training in the pool yet it didn't feel even slightly familiar to me.

We were at a meet on both afternoons this weekend ... 8 hours of stroke & turn with kids.... lots of DQs for the poor little ones missing the wall on the turns.... it's not the 48m backstroke

was this at B Train Cancer fund raiser :) ?

I spent a lot of time with Andrea, known her since we were like 14. Great training partner for 200 Fly... We did 60x25 fly together more times than I care to remember...
20 on 30
20 on 25
20 on 20

take 60 between rounds

I haven't see Yannick in a long time. Have met Mike once at an alumni thing.
