Just last evening I was looking up ALS (watched a couple eps of 2nd season Jessica Jones). 95% of people who get ALS don't know why, 5% inherit it. Most people die in 2-4 years. Lou Gehrig survived 2 years with it.

Hawking was diagnosed with ALS at 21/22 in ~64. Dude lived with ALS for almost 60 years!
