alternatives to Club La Santa?
hi all -
i'm looking to spend a week in late march/early april doing some fair-weather mileage. we're looking for something sort of like the club la santa experience, though they're mostly all booked out. requirements:

-direct flight from zurich
-proper pool (25/50m)
-decent rental bikes
-self-catering is nice, but not necessary
-any other training options (run/gym) and spa (sauna, massage) a plus

mallorca looks OK but is a rather annoying flight, with a long layover in barcelona en route. las playitas on fuerteventura is also booked up. does anyone else offer this kind of hotel?

thanks!
-mike

I had the same issue over New Year so i rented an apartment in Correlejo on Fuerteventura. Plenty of options for running, road biking is a bit limited as there's only 2 roads out of town but roads are good and drivers relatively considerate, swimming is good because you can get a month pass for €40 at Oasis Papagayo resort and use their 50m pool. http://www.oasispapagayo.com/

I noticed that Joel Folliol has his squad based there recently, so can't be too bad.

there is a nice 25m pool in la olivia ( 15en k south of correlejo ) and the cycling and running from there is really good ( pool is 2 euro and is always empty and open form 8.15 am til 22 pm wekdays and 9-2 saturday there is also a little gym . its a quiet enough place but many great dirt run tracks .

Our club winter camp is at Tri Sports Lanzarote. Great place, its a big villa with many bedrooms. They do coached weeks or weeks where you can just go and do your own thing. All food is included and prepared. 25m pool on site, secure bike storage, gym, Jacuzzi. Near PDC so you can go down for a swim.

Or you can do like my buddy and I did for a downhill ski trip in St. Anton Austria in 1991. Everything was booked up, so his strategy was to try to score with some women and get invited to stay with them. We were mostly unsuccessful for a few days and had to sleep in a cold train station or in a cold rental car turning on the car every few hours to heat it back up. But after a few days of skiing we finally got successful for the second half of the trip LOL. You can do that when you are 26 years old and single and will spend all day skiing, and most of the night in a pub of discotheque, so you just need a roof.

You can fly to Barcelona, take the metro into town, then the fast train to Girona. You can also take a taxi but it's quite expensive if you just pick one up from the street. There is some great biking around Girona though and there is a pool also.

Prob not as good for pure training as Lanzarote, but much prettier in my opinion.

Check the recently remodeled Barcelo Occidental Lanzarote. It has a 10 lane 50meter pool, gym, bike rental, etc ...
https://www.barcelo.com/...dental-lanzarote-mar

Please post your experience if you go.

In addition to that, if you can do without the pool, I would recomend an aparthotel in Puerto del Carmen. I’ve had positive experiences in Jable and Los Hibiscos. Plenty of bike shops to rent and you can swim in the bay even without wetsuit this time of year if it’s sunny. It is much cheaper and you are not confined to a resort ( more options to eat and shop). There is also a pretty decent gym called Fariones with day (18€) and weekly (55€) passes.

thanks everyone. i should have added that we'll be schlepping a newborn with us, so the idea of jumping onto trains and etc is also none too appealing.

as for the 'dev method,' i suspect my wife would take a fairly dim view of that one. although to be fair, i haven't asked her yet.

Mike,
Where did you go or will be going? I’m sitting at Playitas as I write this having arrived yesterday from Zurich. First impression: so far, we -- 'lightly' athletic wife, 12yr old and a 10yr old -- like the place.

A good 50m pool, but swimming can be tough. In a shared lane yesterday (max 8 ppl) with one guy doing a wiiide breaststroke almost his whole time (?!) and everyone else doing their own thing. In short, my wife saw me swimming and said I should reserve my own lane next time. A shared lane is €3.50/hr while a reserved lane is €19.50/hr, but then you'll get in a quality workout. I managed to get in 3300m in 55min, avg pace 1:27/100m, but it was often frustrating but I just considered it open water practice.

Plenty of trail running and road running options. The former is good as my first events this year are trail ultras, including a 53km in just under 3wks.

I have a question (that's too late to be asked in my case): which is the better bike to bring here, triathlon or road? I love my road bike, it's great for climbing and I would have loved to ride that here. I brought my new tri bike, which was just built out three days ago, which I wanted to get on (been 14 years since I last raced tri -- excepting two sprints 4yrs ago) and get a feel for it.

I'm having a bit of regret thinking I should've brought my road bike as it looks like I'd have more fun here on that bike. But IM Wales (my only A race this year) is hilly and I'm here for training (not fun ;), though the race is not until Sept.

My old Calfee TetraTri is on the trainer at home so I've been spending the time in aero. I used the 16yr old Calfee for a fit in December to both make the most of the turbo sessions and to configure the new tri bike.

I will answer my own question this week. I have the tri bike, so I'll ride that. I *may* rent a road bike from the resort for a day to compare.

Any thoughts out there from the community on which is the better bike to bring this early in the season for training camp? Road or tri?

Thanyapura in Phuket, Thailand. Flights are a little limited, I believe Swiss air does it 2x a week.

Staying there for two weeks starting Thursday.

Looks great, but I’ll let you know.

Check out https://buzzperformance.com/triathlon/

My wife and I have been 3 and 2 times respectively and enjoyed it every single time.

Fantastic guided and supported bike routes from Morzine in every direction, more climbs than you could shake a stick at, amazing trail running, 25m and 50m pool as well as Lake Montriond for swimming.

The coaches, ex-ITU racer and her husband work you as hard as you want for the week and the in-house chef prepared the nutritious gourmet food...
