Outerbanks Triathlon
Anyone do the Outer Banks triathlon? I was looking for one around that time, and looks interesting, but I have not found much information about it. Looks like it has only been going for a few years, and the website does not actually have a link to the race maps or anything, just to the registration.

Yes I did the 70.3 in 2017 and I know there was at least one other slowtwitcher there.

Are you talking about the sprint, oly, or half? I've done the sprint and the half. The last time I did was 2012. If that's not too ancient for you, my race report is below.

If you want to make an entrance rent a plane and pilot cuz the transition is right against the tarmac of the airport in Manteo. You'll look like the shiznit pulling your tri rig out of a Cessna and racking it like a boss....

I've done the Olympic the past 2 years and its a cool race. Typically non-wetsuit even at that time of year (to the dismay of Fishbum :D)

I could be in. Back to 140.6 for me this year after a 5 year hiatus. IMAZ, and a fall half iron to give me a gut check would be spot on.

We might need a bigger plane....

I've done the 70.3 three times, but missed last years. I love it. The swim is open water, but you're in a bay/sound, so it's not as bad as the ocean. Once you get out of town on the bike, it's open roads. One year, there was actually a traffic jamb at the half way turn-around. They stopped cars to allow the bikes to do the turn around in the school parking lot, but blocked cars on the main road and thus blocked bikes too. The ride over the bridge (4 times) can be very windy. One year I did about 12 MPH into the wind and it seamed like 40 going the other way. I really enjoyed the run. There's a bit of shade on about 1/2 the course, but can be warm. We go a day early and sight see. Went down to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, toured the Lost Colony, Jockey Ridge and Kitty Hawk. The wife really enjoys the trip.

Really weird thing, is apparently I'm allergic to something on the Island that time of year because I've suffered from exercise induced asthma each and every time on the run. Forces me to slow down a bit.

They should have all the course maps on their website.

He's not lying. That wind is no joke!

I was looking at doing the half. Decided I wanted to move my end of year race up a month. The last 2 years I did Beach2Battleship, Pretty sure it is unlikely for the wind to be worse than B2B in 2016.

Good to hear it sounds like the race is done decent. The new video for this year says it is the 3rd year of it, so I did not realize it had been around for that long, but I just checked and the video they are using in the article I saw it was published back in 2012.

Always like good info about an event, and their website basically just had a register link. No course maps, information about the event, or anything.

BTW, how is the after event? Good food?

Here are some snippets/edits from some PM's re: the OBX half. This is all based on the 2016 race; which was my first half in 6 or so years.

IMO it's a race on paper that looks like it should be faster than the results show. It's an easy & difficult race.

Easy bc the flat bike, 1 short hill that you do 4x. The run has a lot of shade and great support. Numerous aid stations with ice cups and some people who live on the course with hoses/sprinklers out, brackish swim and they usually try to get any current to assist you on the long leg of the triangle shaped swim.

It's tough bc it's the OBX and there is always wind which increases as the day goes on. Usually you get a tailwind out over the bridge then a cross/turning to headwind until the 1st U turn. then tail/cross hit the 2nd U turn, come back then a head wind over the bridge, (closed to traffic btw -a nice touch). That pure headwind section is 10k or so. 20k of nose on head wind which makes any race harder. It's relentless for 10k straight. Yes you get 20k of pure tailwind but you still lose more time than you can gain. It's a get into your aero position and do not come out of it for 90k course. If you're not comfy in that position it's going to be a tough(er) race. fwiw I rode ~ 6 or 7w higher for my second lap on the bike but was ~ :80 seconds slower

Re: heat and humidity. I didn't think it was that hot or humid but people where complaining about it. Probably mid 80's and same for humidity. Can easily be worse, expect worse be pleasantly surprised when it's not worse.

The swim was long the year I did it ,no one broke 30. Non wet suit and several over achievers at the gun. They chip you into the water then say X min to the start. No countdown like 3min 2min. It was just 3,2, blow the horn to start. I was about 6 rows deep and left of the main group peeing when the gun went off. Nearly bridged over/up. Caught the last dude's feet and then 6 strokes later he popped, I couldn't bridge that gap and I lost 2+ to the lead group.

The first/last .75 mile of the run is on grass which is slower than pavement. A decent portion of the run is on a greenway & shaded.

other pro's: lots of airbnb's that you can bike to/from the race. I think we were <6k away (right near where the bridge meets the mainland) so I just biked to the start which was cool. The ex found some mtn biking trails, got in and hour or so and then rode all over the place popping up here and there.

Grocery store had a lot of healthy stuff which for a redneck grocery store, well both the Ex and I were very surprised.

I'd go back and race there. Anyway hope that helps

Bruce - maybe we can do a Fiesta, OBX half highest cumulative time buys the first 2 rounds of beer!?!?!!?

That event used to be an FS Series event. Then it went local organization ran event, so that's why I think they say it's in what the 3rd year. When I did the Sept race in '12 it was FS Series event.

The local OBX people imo have stepped up their game in that area for endurance events. They've had the always popular fall marathon/half. It sounds like they have a spring event now too?

This was my first 1/2. All the comments are spot on, its flat, but not fast. Again, my first one, pushed too hard on the bike and had a miserable run. I think I even sat down at one point. Really good support, and flying in would be boss.

Easy to make a weekend out of it. Stay on the beach and have some nice post race fun with the family.

There is a burger joint down there with a hamburger topped with crab meat. It is actually really good.

Thanks for that info. I will have to keep this one in mind. Going to see if anyone else in my area is interested before I signup so I do not have to make the trip alone.

I may have an overly ambitious race list this year, but I want an end of year 70.3, and wanted something different than previous years.
