It better be clear by Christmas when we're heading up for a holiday.

it's a beautiful place to swim in. hope that it is clear of the toxic algae by march!

I'm bummed bc I wanted to do the Friday night 1k swim race this evening.
Have to say running the lake path this morning was awesome!

But this part is pretty cool -- making the best of it:
"if you decide not to compete on Saturday, we would like to offer you the chance to transfer your entry at no cost to any of our other 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 races in Australia or New Zealand."

i saw this and thought jane patterson must be in the works there. she put on IMNZ for years, then went to managing nz-australia races, and always not just put on great races, but did the right thing for athletes when crises arose.

Didn’t race it this year, but have in the past. Many friends did and had a great (but hot) morning. There have been further patches of algae spotted in the south eastern parts of the lake this week, which is a real worry. Epic Swim and Across The Lake are also at risk - but if we get some decent rainfall soon, hopefully things will improve...it’s been ridiculous this last three or four weeks.

I´m coming from Chile in march for the IM NZ. Could this toxic algae still be in the lake.
Has this happens in previous years.

Impossible to say I’m afraid. The last time I remember the swim being cancelled was 2011 (2012?) and that was because people were actually able to surf on the lake. Conditions the following day were perfect but they ran it as a 70.3 instead. More of the algae was found in th Hutt river near Wellington today, so unfortunately it’s not an isolated incident. Perhaps when we get some rain things will improve. I hope you’ll still come across!

2011 was the year it rained all day.

That’s right - thanks! I remember there were some frantic pro punctures in the downpour.
