PUH-LEEZE Help me decide which bike (Cervelo P3/Trek SC 9.9) and which size (54/56) do I need based on my Retul analysis
Quote | Reply
Quick background: I'm moving to Miami and will start training to compete on a 70.3 next year. I hate running, but I'll get there. I do ride at least 150 miles/week on my bike (Specialized Roubaix 56cm) and did some swimming for the past two years, but now I just want to put it all together.

Because biking is my preferred poison, I thought about getting a tri bike, but I won't be in Miami until early September, which makes me hard to take advantages of some deals I already found on eBay. Given the fact that fitting rules the tri world, and I'm scared of simply getting a 56 based on my road bike only to realize it's too big or a 54 and find out it's too small.

Last November, I did get a Retul for my current bike and have my Anthropometrics from the analysis.

I'm 1.83 (6'0?) and my anthropometrics are as follows:

Thigh lenght L/R: 455mm/453mm
Shin lenght L/R: 436mm/415mm
Hip-Wrist Vertical L/R: -80mm/-52mm
Hip-Wrist Forward L/R: 704mm/721mm
Hip-Elbow Vertical L/R: 62mm/56mm
Hip-Elbow Forward L/R: 492mm/497mm

Now, I know I have no idea what any of these means, but hopefully somebody would be able to translate this into english and help me decide on which bike (And size) I should get.

My candidates are:

* Cervelo P3 2014~2017
* Trek Speed Concept 9.9 2015
* mmmmmaybe a Shiv, if you guys think given my measurements, I should get a shorter/taller bike

What do you guys think I should get?

PS: In case you're wondering why don't I just ask the why who did the fitting for me last year? He vanished from the face of the earth and since I'm still stuck in South America, the closes Retul shop is in another country via a 5-hour flight. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm not a Retul guy, so I don't know if those measurements could tell Retul folks enough to make a bike recommendation. Is your current bike set up according to the results of your Retul-influenced fit, and are you happy with how it feels and your performance?

Hi, Travis.

Thanks for chiming in. Yes, my current bike is setup according to the results of this analysis, and I'm perfectly fine pulling 5-hour long rides in it. Granted, it's a Roubaix, which is on the comfy side of road bikes.

I missed the detail about this being your road bike in your original post. I'm sorry, but I can't really provide any help to translate your road bike fit to a tri bike - it's very different. I would definitely recommend looking at the list of F.I.S.T.-certified fitters for someone who can take you through the protocol, help you find your happy place in space, and put the right bike under it. Of course, if you happen to be in the Indianapolis area sometime, I'd be glad to help! Good luck in your search.

those measurements are not gonna help with a frame selection - in my opinion.

frame size mostly based on height and inseam.
don't need to overthink it. Torso. arm inseam and height and use an online bike frame calculator.

one can make a just about any frame size work.

want to save weight, then go small.
comfort riding go with the average/normal frame size. 58
what handling characteristics do you want?

saddle position, crank length, elbow pad contact and shifter/reach location all can be adjusted to make a frame fit.

one of the 1st things I would do when you moved to the new home .Find a good bike shop and go for some test rides. A bike is more than stem length, handlebar width And seat height .Bikes have personality how they corners ,climb. If you are getting a custom bike built the builder will define the ride .a few going stock go test ride find one you love and then get a proper fit because I can guarantee you the will not be adequate this year. your body changes by up to 4 cm every day. You need to know what your relationship is to the bike you want a ride. find.
One you love .some bikes corner better than others . some climb better .have fun. This is about to be your new best friend. You will spend more time with a new bike on weekend sand with your significant others except when sleeping .choose wisely

I think you first need to consider which problem you are trying to solve and then go from there?

Get your ass on a frame? Sure, look at a 54 or 56 P3 or whatever in a Trek like you are asking.

Make yourself *fast*... aerodynamic, comfortable, powerful? See a proper fitter and start thinking 58cm instead of 54cm.

You don't translate those numbers into a bike size. The numbers we need, if you're happy with the fit you got, is your armpad stack from BB and armpad reach from BB. Also, a picture (or video) of you on the bike (from the side) is worth it's weight in gold.

I agree with the other fitters here - road bike measurements do NOT translate to Tri bikes. Retul is nothing special, what you need is a good TRI fitter with a fitting bike. Any investment you make in fitting will be WELL worth it — and potentially save you a purchase mistake or future injury. A lot will depend on your proportions and flexibility. The longer your legs, or the worse your flexibility, the more you’re likely to need a bike with tall stack and short reach — at least 110 mm more stack than reach. If you have short legs or good flexibility, you may be able to get away with a more aggressive geometry, i.e. shorter stack and longer reach.
