Fairly urgent Auckland NZ help (or mechanical advice ) needed
Quote | Reply

I Just arrived in Auckland for the World Master Games. I unpacked my P5 to find that the BB got slammed in transit and is now protruding on one side (see photo below). The crank won't turn. I have one day to get it fixed or find another bike (it's Fri night and I race Sunday morning). So, I'm humbly asking if any local peeps can:

1) Advise where to go to get it fixed fast, when there's a bazillion cyclists and triathletes in town

or

2) Rent me a TT/Tri bike for this Sunday

or

3) Recommend a good pub to drown my sorries over a wasted trip to the Antipodes.

I guess, before #3, I may just borrow a hammer and see if I can pound it back in.....

That looks like a fairly straightforward fix. What tools do you have with you? Assuming that's the 3D crank it comes off with just two Allen keys, both of which are on a multi-tool. Having got the crank off you could tap it back into place fairly easily. Alternatively it's a quick fix for a shop. I'm sure one of the Auckland locals could help. Try sending Fulla ? a PM. I may be wrong but have a feeling he's Auckland.

Edit. Having looked more closely I don't think that is the 3D so I'm not sure how it comes off. I've spoken to someone involved with organising the tri and Giant should be on site as they are the games bike sponsor so it may be worth heading to the venue tomorrow.

Thanks for the quick response. The rotor crank is a 3D+, so there's an alloy bolt that needs a shimano style cassette lockring tool, which I unfortunately did not bring along. I will try the venue tomorrow for that. I'm glad that you think its ok to just to tap the thing back in. I had some concerns about that and haven't brought any kind of press with me.

Are you doing the tri as well? I'm pretty confident that you will be able to get that sorted tomorrow. Do you have a car?

Is that a BBinfinite bottom bracket? With the crankarms tight I can't think of how a standard BBRight BB could slide to one side like that. It would take a PF cup flange failure on the DS.

If it is a BBinfinite bottom bracket, it should be fairly straightforward to press back into place. In a pinch it could be tapped back into place with a soft mallet. But having never run that model of BB I'm not sure if it will hold without more loctite retainer.

Just doing the TT. Don't have a car as I'm staying close to queens wharf. I was thinking of uber-ing to a shop.

it is indeed a BBinfinite. I'm puzzled how it could end up like that. My first negative experience with the Ruster henhouse.

For Rotor Cranks you need a 8mm nut (??? thinking about it and it should be) on the drive side, a Shimano nut for the cassette lock ring, a 24mm open end wrench for the Shimano nut and a 35 - 40Nm/ torque wrench to tighten it proper later. A car mechanic ore port should have the needed open end & torque wrench. First remove with the 8mm nut the bolt on the drive side, remove with the Shimano nut the inside screw nut, put the bolt in again to the plot, turn around the screw nut and screw it over the bolt, unscrew the bolt and it will push out the crank pushing the screw nut outwards. It's a "self releasing system". Use a rubber mallet to push out the non drive side.

To fix the BB use some lubricant (if some is around without grease like crystal grease) check the matter ore problem at the cup and press it in again if possible. For example 2 sheets of wood and a clamping screw ore what ever applies forces under control. LocTite is only needed if the BB shell is loose and caused the problem (hell, than it's really loose). Before you remove the BB make sure you have a replacement, it may get damaged.

Tighten the 8mm nut with at least 35Nm! but not more than 40Nm after the shimano screw nut is turned around inside the drive side crank again and screwed to the stop. Adjust the play with the distance screw on the non drive side, it's locked with a .. 2 ore 2.5mm alan key. For some installations thin distance rings are needed on the bb axle to make the play fitting, normally they come with ore are parts of the BB. (sorry, english is not my mother language)

Good luck!

A guess would be that your bike and case took a solid hit, with the frame spanning something below it that allowed the crankset and BB assembly to move to the NDS. The BBInfinite is pressfit installation plus loctite retainer. I would guess the final fix will need more loctite.

It is fortunate that your frame wasn't smashed or cracked. I was assuming the crank would not turn because the DS was pushed up against frame, but if the bearings are damaged then swapping the BB will take a local shop and more logistics. Hope you get this sorted so you can race.

The BBInfinite BB is pressed in as a single unit from one side. It only has a flange on the NDS. Since there is no DS flange the crankarms and spacers do not hold the assembly in place. So it is entirely pressfit so no grease and some loctite is standard to keep it from walking out under load. With the tolerances I've seen for PF30/BBRright BB frame shells I've wondered if what happened with Jen's bike would be common with BBInfinite installs.

Wow, infinite trust on LocTite, strange build, didn't know that .. but maybe better the bb moved than the frame got cracked.

Kiwivelo on the North Shore, or perhaps Gordon McCauley in Silverdale but he's probably too far from you.

Where are you staying? Mount Eden Cycles are also very good - the first two are Cervelo dealers and the second Specializec.

I'm at the Sofitel (viaduct). I will probably taxi to a shop. I don't want to take a risk of the BB walking out during the race and making me crash, particularly since I'll have my son waiting at the finish.

Thanks for these refs!

OK if you're in the city centre there is iBike on Quay St. I do t know how good they are so Mount Eden Cycles would be better just because I know they have a great reputation.

OK. Thank you to everyone who responded. I really, really appreciate it. I was totally lucky and found Benny at Ibike, the ex pro tour mechanic. He not only fixed the BB in about 5 minutes, he tweaked a bunch of other stuff that was off. Amazing guy. Big credit goes to Gordon of GMC Bike Shop who was ready to help me but recommended Benny because he was about 50 minutes closer to me.

I remember years ago when I sold a very expensive powermeter to a slowtwitch member, letting him fly away with only a promise to send a check when he got home. I've always valued that level of trust and mutual help on this forum. I'm very grateful to see it continue.

cheers, Jens

Nice work - I haven't used iBike but that is good to know. I have checked out their bike porn.

As for Gordon At GMC he's a dead set legend. Even going mountain biking these days and crushing it.
