how to ride slower
Anyone have thoughts on how to reduce the speed on training sessions?

Crashed twice going at 40+kph on training rides. No fun at all.

airhubs are way too expensive. I am looking for a 50w-100w reduction.

Get a cheap rear wheel, and intentionally setup your back brake to drag on the rim. You can adjust the drag by using the barrel adjuster on the brake. Then, get a long cage derailleur and 32 cassette so that you can gear down to maintain a normal cadence while riding 20 KPH.

Be sure to gear down so you keep the same cadence.

Are you crashing because you're going 40kph, or because of other factors?

IIWY: I'd figure out what's causing the repeated crashes, and resolve that issue(s) before I did something to alter my bike/wheels.

Fat Boy going at 45kph

Since aero is the main resistence factor, I suppose a fat bike wouldnt slow me down unless I severely deflate the tires?

Aero is the main resistance with most narrow tired tri bikes.

Not so with fat bikes.
The rolling resistance of those tires at lower pressures is quite significant.
And the big tires themselves provide quite a bit of aero resistance at somewhat higher speeds.

Going over the handlebars or having the bike break from out under you is going hurt as much at 20 kph as it will at 40. I'm with philly, it would make sense to focus more on not crashing.

Gatorskins, Mavic Open Sport wheels, butyl tubes, and a baggie jersey is a real strava bummer.

You just need to tape more gels to the top tube. Oh, and run round water bottles on the down tube and seat tube.

Some good suggestions already.

This is a real problem. It solved itself for me. One trail here has pretty stiff headwinds going one direction and a tailwind the other. So intervals one way, turn around, spin to recover the other way, repeat. It is weird working that hard and only going 19-20 mph.

This seems like such a strange problem and is hard to relate to. I'd say if riding at high speeds is causing you issues you should do more of it until you're comfortable at those speeds. In a race you'll benefit from being comfortable at high speeds.
If the route you're on isn't smooth enough (you mentioned cracks in the road) maybe find a different smoother route? I'd do that before doing any of the above.
There's always the very safe route - TrainerRoad!
