I ended up doing the race in my tri suit with the sports bra underneath, and both the chamois and the bra were still wet at the end of the race. It was only 9 degrees C today, with wind, so wearing only the suit wasn't an option.

Not a bad experience; in warmer weather I'll likely do this again. But for another cool weather + pool tri, I'll likely wear only the swimsuit, then put the sports bra on overtop afterward.

Regardless: I FINISHED MY FIRST TRIATHLON!!

It would take time to put the sports bra on after the swim.

Congratulations on your finish!

When I race, I always have a sports bra on underneath whatever top I am wearing (just not enough support). Having said that, dealing with temperatures is another matter entirely. A hot thread on the main forum is dealing with triathletes who didn't wear enough clothes for the cold temperatures and the number of hypothermia cases that ensued as a result.

In my experience, since we women don't generate the heat that men do because of our lesser muscle mass, we seem to intuitively prepare better ;-) Having a windbreaker to put on in T1 or even a polar fleece top and a windbreaker goes a long way to having a good experience in a race versus being miserable and wishing you had worn more.

Yes, it takes a few seconds more to have enough clothes on, but I'd far rather be warm and comfortable than cold and miserable any day. And you can always take off too much clothing if you overheat, versus being cold and wet...

Agreed - I was much more concerned with getting sick from being cold and wet.

I'm nowhere near the point for trying to shave seconds off my T1 time -- yet!

I don't think any of the Wonens will be racing in a speedo. Please take all speedo talk to the main forum.

Speedo could mean swimsuit only for the womens.

I've done races in my speedo and I'm a woman.

Here's a nice compromise for you, which worked well for me in plenty of races.
Cold weather event w pool swim first:
1. Good supportive moisure wicking sports bra and 8" long tri shorts w Speedsuit over the top
2. Take off speedsuit, put on wicking tech T plus lightweight vest and arm warmers, or lightweight jacket and race belt w numbers
3. plus socks and bike shoes.
4. For bike to run transition, just change to running shoes.

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier, but good job getting the first race under your belt.
What's the next one?

Somehow missed this -- CONGRATULATIONS IslandGeekette. Good luck in the open water, no walls to contain you!
