I ran the numbers on Sheldon Brown and a 46/11 is the same as a 50/12 and I am just losing a bit for climbing. I am still able to average around 33kph-34kph for my normal 20km TT course. I am missing a bit of top end when zipping down the hills but it just means that I am coasting a bit sooner than normal. The 46 was also a test ring just in case I did not like running 1X so the idea was to test with this and if I did not like it, to move it over to a road 1X set up in which case the 46t would be good matched up with an 11/28 again I don't need more than that for climbing in my area.

Man a 46 is sooooo little!

I think 46 is fantastic! Tried 44/12 as a "big gear". That was too little. But 46/11 is niiiice. And for climbing, 46x28 or 46x32 is actually useful!

But I'm thinking road bike and races with "real" climbing (mile+ at 8% or more). For a flat course, I could get away with 50 or 52 up front, but then I wouldn't need it and would be fine with a 46.

just this morning i was looking at gearing ratios and thinking of moving to a 54/42 trying to gain some more top and for going down hill! I have to run a 11/28 living in austin otherwise i will be walking up hills here, lol.

I was conservative with my first pass and have a 46 tooth up front and 11-36 in the back, but will probably be putting a 48 tooth up front in the next few weeks.

46x11 is still 32.70 mph at 100rpm though......

I think 46x11-36 is ideal. I currently run 44x11-32 and occasionally want a slightly bigger or slightly smaller gear. Unfortunately I'm limited by my rear derailleur (Ultegra GS) to 32t.

The bento box comes off for racing. Otherwise, race setup.

I had a 7 min faster HIM bike split (2:20 to 2:13) this past weekend on the same course compared with three years ago on a few less watts (272 vs 278). New bike + race suit and a few other tweaks probably helped to a quicker time.

My 'cheap' aero road bike. Planet-X Stealth TT frame built with drop bars. It is a relaxed TT frame (STA of 76degrees), so worked out nicely and I'm very happy with the ride. I'll throw on clip-on aerobars and bring the seat up and forward for the few aquabikes I do.

I finally got my ride, even came with Profile Design aero road bars. only one short ride on it so far. Averaged about 15mph for 30 minutes, then one quick sprint and had top speed according to my Garmin of 28.2MPH. Can't wait to really build my base and see what I can do.
