Lionel Sanders Barrelman Title Up For Grabs
Quote | Reply
As posted in the past there is $5,000 in prize money up for grabs at the 2nd Annual Niagara Falls Barrelman on September 20th. Both pro and age group athletes are eligible for the cash. Kristen Marchant will be back to defend on the women's side. Unfortunately, since he will be tuning up for his Kona debut, Lionel Sanders will not be there to compete for the men's title. It looks like it could be a close, exciting race and a U.S. vs Canada battle. Registration is still open but we thought some of you might like a preview of the top contenders as of today's date. http://www.multisportcanada.com/...-the-overall-titles/

Would love to hear from any Slowtwitch athletes who will be joining us.

Thanks for reminding me. Cody was hoping to join us at Barrelman, he DNF due to a mechanical last year, but recent events have derailed that possibility. Cody and I spoke last week and after his race in Austria and is now focusing on the Texas training and has picked out another race in September. I am not sure who else he has discussed this with so I will keep that confidential. Cody, like Lionel raced with our series for two years and is near and dear to our hearts.

I'll be there. Looking to break 6 hrs. for the 1st time.( Hey, I'm old and slow. We all have our goals). I'll also be keeping an keen eye out for any Canadian course cutters. Won't be Miller time on my watch. (Too soon?)
Seriously though, the wife and I are arriving Friday and leaving Monday. Any restaurant recommendations? How about things to do. We will probably hit the casino and the boat tour of the Falls.

Most of the major attraction are worthwhile, maid of the mist, whirlpool aero are, big ferris wheel, journey behind the falls. If your up for a short hike, the Niagara glen is about a Km past the aero car.

If you've never been, check out Niagara on the Lake (a short drive from the falls). Lots of nice restaurants, shops and historical sites. Be sure to pick up some fresh fudge at Maple Leaf fudge :)

If wineries are your thing there's a huge selection in the region and many have great restaurants. I'm sure your hotel can recommend something. If you're looking for other things, there's a nice artisan cheese place in Jordan (upper canada cheese)

If you want to do a few of the main sites, the adventure pass is great and includes a shuttle bus. Its a lot to pack into one day, but two easy days are good.

Friday night there will be fireworks over the falls. http://www.niagaraparks.com/...falls-fireworks.html

back on topic, I'm signed up for the race, but will be nowhere near the podium :(

As peeg and Andy007 stated there is lots to do and see in and around the Falls. It is one of the great things, other than the race itself, about this destination. You also have a tremendous selection of hotels in all price ranges and they don't jack up their rates because a race is going on. Please say hi at the pre-race briefing and I hope to shake your hand at the finish line somewhere in that 5 hour range.

Unfortunate that Lionel will not be back to defend.

Interview I did with him last year after he crushed it at the inaugural Barrelman - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deO1--YOcwY

I was talking yesterday with Lionel's key adviser Barrie Shepley and Lionel has been, pouring on the training, and really liking the 4 - 5 days we have had recently in southern Ontario with Kona-like heat & humidity. Perfect conditions!

This will be another great race this year at the Barrelman. Who will take the win on the men's side?

I'll be there doing the bike/run and defending my title as well. Feel free to make up a title for me. ;)

LIonel's absence is an opening for Fleck to come out of retirement on old school gear and take the race win!!! Best of luck to everyone racing and to John and team for bringing this together in an awesome venue.

Without Sanders there, my relay team might have a chance at an overall podium, but I'm guessing we're not eligible for the cash :-)

Ok Art, here is the deal. If your or any other relay team beats Lionel's time from 2014 we will give the team a free entry to 2016. This, given that we actually had a 92K bike due to last minute construction vs the 90K this year, might be doable. Bring your "A" team and game!

The screaming tailwind we had for the last 45k last year might have negated that extra 2k a bit. :)

I wish I was doing it again this year John but I plan to be back next year!

So did we get Fleck out of retirement yet? Can we shame him into racing with Oakley factory pilots, a neon speedo, grip shift, a Francesco Moser edition Cinelli disc wheel, and 6 speed corn cob cassette? Come on Fleck!!!

As I recall you had a huge headwind in the first 25k or so. I do know after the race that Lionel was pretty sure he set a world record time in the first 90k for a race of this distance. We hope to see you again in 2016!

peeg and Andy,
Thanks so much for the recommendations. It's our 1st trip to the area, looks like there is plenty to do. Is it legal to tape fudge to the top tube? :)

I'm in for the bike/run. Bringing the wife and kids (8 and 5), so hope to have fun Saturday seeing/doing everything in the area. My son is really excited about missing a day of school.

Sweet!

We think we've got a solid swimmer (me!) and runner, but our cyclist will be the first to tell you he's the weak link. Given our cyclist's pace of improvement though, next year we might have a chance.

Our absolute best-case dream finish time is 4h 10m (25m + 2h 30m + 1h 15m), so Lionel is safe. Our more likely time is probably 4h 25m or slower.

Come on Dev - I SET the trends and only involve myself in the stuff that is going to be REALLY cool/functional! :)

Full body tri race suits are all the rage this year. Here I am in 1993 At Ironman Hawaii rocking a Sugoi full tri race suit!
