...was done in 1969, gong and all.

The Lemon Song...

Put your headphones on, crank it up loud and listen to the drums….

Dazed and Confused is also pretty credible.

Damn strait. And x2 on the LOUD. All LZ should be cranked. I have been a headphones guy since the bean bag era. I will also vote for zep's Rock and Roll. That song is just tight, every instrument, every riff, right where it's supposed to be.

Band in its prime, hitting on all cylinders.

My kind of drumming. No fancy solos just solid rhythm through some crazy changes in tempo.

Solid base line too.

Ah, see? By concentrating on the drums you are opened to the rolling, meandering yet firmly anchored bass line.

Also, keep in mind that Bonham used a single bass drum which on occasion he makes sound like doubles.

And the gaps, the shit he doesn't hit are almost as important as what he does play.

And makes for a darned-difficult song to run to, if you try to match your candence with the beat.

Its ok. My favourite drumming by him is fairly basic but it's what draws me to this song.

Bonzo was just unbelievable. I could never play like him....at all. The feel is just so difficult to reproduce. The guy just absolutelty grooves. Thanks for posting this song. I'll have to work on it for a while before getting frustrated.

I've always thought of the big three in rock being Peart, Bonzo, and Moon (not specifically in that order), with all three being completely different talents.

If anyone has ever seen the TV show Freaks and Geeks, there was a funny episode where the dad told his daughter's drummer friend that Neil Peart sucked. After arguing a bit, they went to the living room and the dad played him Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. It was pretty amusing. Lots of great jazz drummers out there, though jazz isn't really my thing.

Such a great drum sequence (if that's the right word) and also gave us this gem:

There are a lot of other Zep songs where the drumming is really good but this one (for me) is done with the music as good or better than any of them. The way it pairs with the bass is just too good.

Other songs not mentioned yet where the drums really make me want to be a drummer are...

Achilles Last Stand

The Crunge

Kashmir

Re: Peart. He's great but I just don't really get into him. He's (sorta) like the drumming equivalent to Steve Vai on guitar.

A drummer who I think goes unnoticed (sometimes) is Stewart Copeland. His beats are just so weird.

I saw a video that he was in a while back (can't remember what it was even about). It was just him playing the drums for Walking on the Moon and it took me a minute or two to even recognize there was a beat there and I didn't know what song it was until they laid the rest of the music over it.

Jazz? Yeah, I don't know enough about it.

Don't forget to strap on the headphones and listen to some Tool drumming sometime.

Not much to it, honestly, but Max Weinberg sounds like an airplane waiting for takeoff in "Candy's Room"

Listen to it again. It isn't "fairly basic". That's the one of the things about Bonham. On the surface a lot of his stuff sounds basic. Listen to Levee with headphones and just listen to the drums. He's got this triple bass hit going (remember he's only using one bass drum) that is unreal and incredibly difficult. He recorded that "live" in a stairwell with the mic a couple floors above him, btw.

All I know is that the first time I heard the song about three bars into it I thought 'this song is awesome'. That isn't normal.

John was a phenomenal drummer, however, I think Ian Paice is technically a better drummer.

The title track from Steely Dan's Aja is a good fusion of jazz and rock drumming and it is likely my favorite drum track of all time. Story goes that Steve Gadd nailed it on the first take.

I never knew "Hollywood Nights" used 2 drummers

I also never knew that the song was inspired by a picture of Cheryl Tiegs

I remember reading once that Bonzo used to get the heaviest sticks he could find and lined the insides of everything in his kit with tin foil so that in his words "it sounded like cannon fire".

Re: Copeland - very unique style but very tight and crisp. Another that I'm a fan of is Pete Thomas who was Elvis Costello's longtime drummer with the Attractions and many of his other collaborations.
