Sympathies go out to tigerchik & katcycles. So sorry for your loss, and hope you find peace & healing soon.

I think I may be missing some of my planned training this week. As if the wipeout on Saturday wasn't enough, I was less than 5mins into a road ride on Monday evening when I was hit from behind by a car. Spent Monday night waiting in the ER - finally treated between 6am-9am and released near-mummified in gauze & tape (road rash sucks) with prescriptions for anti-inflammatories & muscle relaxants, a referral for physio/massage if needed, a sore right-side lower back & shoulder (where I landed pretty hard), a stiff neck and an achey head. My helmet most likely saved my life - it cracked in 4 places when my right temple whacked the pavement, but I didn't lose consciousness. Oh, and I have a wicked puncture wound behind my left knee - might've been one of the broken spokes taking a jab at me.

Bike looks ok except the rear wheel (where the car hit me) is taco'd - half the spokes are bent or broken. I'll take it to a shop to have it checked, though.

After getting my prescriptions filled Tuesday morning, getting home & having something to eat (I hadn't eaten dinner before heading out, so it was something like 19hrs since my last meal), I took an anti-inflammatory and a muscle relaxant then went to bed and slept from 11am until 6am this morning. I'm at the office today, but head still feels a bit wonky - hard to tell if it's from the bashed noggin or just from too much sleep.

I can walk (slowly & with a bit of pain) and drive, but I have no idea when I'll be able to train again.

Cheers!

How horrible. I'm so sad for you. I'm so glad it wasn't worse, and that your helmet did its job!!!!

The road rash is going to be a bitch in the shower. Take some good meds and wait an hour before you try that - but I'm a big baby.

Did the driver check and see if you were ok? Was s/he texting or something? Did the police at least give them a citation?

Sending you positive vibes for healing. Take care of yourself. The couple days after a crash are the worst because you're so achy. Don't rush back to work. make sure you let yourself heal.

Thanks guys - appreciate all the kind thoughts.

The driver did stop, and I called 911 - a witness stopped as well and encouraged the 911 call. Myself, the witness and the driver all gave statements.

Then I got $110 ticket for "changing lanes - not in safety". I was passing a freeway off-ramp - had shoulder checked twice to establish speed of car coming down ramp, then signaled with my right hand that I was coming over and picked up my pace. I had space - he was at least 80m back when I initiated my maneuver. I do this all the time, since this interchange is only a few blocks from my house. Below is not to scale.

I can only assume that the driver of the white car (who hit me) hit the gas to try to merge in front of the brownish car (the lady who witnessed it). I heard a horn behind me and the world went wonky. I know I hit hard on my right, but have no real road rash there, and when I got up I was on my left side...so best I can guess I hit initially on the hood of his car, then landed on the gravelly paved shoulder when he stopped.

He claims he saw me and tried to slow down & "fit his car between me and the (brownish car)", but he hit me with his driver's side.

That's the mark from him smashing into my rear tire. My husband says there were dents in his hood.

I'm going to fight the ticket. The cop claims that if I'd just continued along the yellow dotted line and he'd hit me coming over, it would be the driver's fault, but that since I was moving over to the curb across the off-ramp lane it was my fault. I explained that I was trying to comply with the Highway Traffic Act requirement for slower moving traffic to move as far to the right as possible, but the cop was unmoved.

My husband tells me the driver and his girlfriend (whom he called, and who showed up at the scene) were laughing while I was being cited.

I'm actually at the office today, and head is feeling clearer than this morning. Might have been the naproxen kicking me - I almost never take pain meds (none since I broke my wrist in Aug 2012) and sometimes they throw me for a loop.

Cheers!

OHHH NOOOOO! I am so sorry to hear that. I really think drivers misjudge bike speed and think they can squeeze in front of us. Definitely fight that ticket bc I don't know how else to handle that one - anyway you look at it, the car needed to slow down or they were going to hit you!!!!

Healing vibes and hugs your way. Be careful with your noggin. If you don't chill now, head injuries, even mild ones, can linger forever! But it sounds like you won't be doing much training for a little while - so it will give the head some time to heal if you do have a minor concussion/TBI.

Heal fast!!!!!

That's complete bullshit. It sounds like you did everything correctly, and the guy was going to fast. It's disappointing he can't take responsibility for his actions, and it's disappointing the police automatically ticket the bike.

I'm just glad you're still in one piece.

Holey crud. I'm glad you're not injured worse. Heal quickly, and I hope you win the ticket fight! My stomach turned when you said the guy who hit you was laughing as the cop wrote you a ticket. Sick.

Thanks womens - you are all such awesome support!

Feeling a fair bit better today after changing the bandages on all the wounds last night. I can't believe the hospital nurse used plain cotton gauze & medipore tape; took a lot of soaking with water bottles in order to get it to release without me screaming. All covered in hydrocolloid (Tegaderm-type) dressings now and much more comfortable...apart from no longer looking like I'm wearing a really low budget butt enhancer.

Head is definitely less foggy - I didn't get enough sleep last night (story of my life), but still much more with it this morning than yesterday. I think the naproxen is contributing a bit of grogginess and the rest was the result of just too much sleep.

Speaking of which, I'll be getting more tonight. We went to visit my Mum (and break the news to her) last night & had to run around a bit to find the hydrocolloid dressings, so weren't home until late. Straight home this evening, dinner, maybe a short walk & bed!

Cheers!

That is a horrible crash and you are very lucky you weren't killed. I have to tell you though you are not going to win that ticket fight. You entered the merge lane, which you are not permitted to do. As someone who rides with traffic a lot, I know we ALL do this maneuver, we want to get out of the way of the merging traffic, to allow them to merge safely - and to avoid riding that dotted line for any longer than necessary. But if you read the motor vehicle act(s) in Canada (I assume it's similar in the US) you are not permitted to move INTO the merge lane they way you did - it's akin to passing on the right. The exception is on highways where there is explicit signage directing a cyclist to cross to the shoulder through the merge lane ("Cyclists cross here").

As for the ticket, you might want to talk to a lawyer first - you may have a much bigger problem here - insurance company X (the white car's insurer) is going to come calling and likely seek to have you deemed 100% at fault. If that is the case, you are not going to get very far re: bike replacement, compensation for pain & suffering, etc.

Hang in there, get better, but please PLEASE call a lawyer to get some advice.

The driver's insurance company called yesterday, mostly asking questions about my injuries & if I was wearing a helmet. They did ask if I'd received a citation and whether I was going to fight it: yes on all counts.

I'm not looking for compensation. I just don't want my driving record affected due to long term insurance rate increase. I don't even plan to claim the wheel replacement cost, and my medical bills are a total of about $50 for meds & bandages right now. I have coverage through husband's work benefits for physio if required.

I do plan to talk to one of the traffic ticket specialist lawyers - would prefer a "you don't pay if we don't win" situation. I'm no expert on the HTA in Ontario, but I was hit from behind and merging traffic is supposed to yield to traffic in the roadway. Slower moving traffic (ie: bikes) are also supposed to move as far as possible to the right to avoid impeding traffic flow. The officer didn't mention anything about it not being permitted to move into the merge lane - just that I did so "unsafely".

Really, the question I'd love to ask a judge is "Do you honestly believe I would intentionally put myself at risk of being hit by a car?"

Cheers!

I know here in Alberta there are lots of accident lawyers that will give you a free consultation. I did that once & it was great. They won't tell you what to do, but will let you know your options & potential reprecussions of different scenarios.

It was an hour or so of my time & no money out of pocket. And zero pressure from them to get you to retain their services (that was my biggest fear).

can you tell us any more about the signage on the freeway exit (before arriving to the street you were on), any signage (merge instructions, yield, speed limit) on the street that the driver should have seen and how long the far right lane continues on that street.

Very sorry about your crash! Do enjoy your time away from training.

MsK,
You might want to think carefully about discussing details of the crash on an internet site. Sometimes this information can be used against you in legal proceedings.

+1000

This is the best advice yet - talk to a good attorney and don't share any more details of accident.

But please do keep us updated on how you feel. I hope a weekend of rest has you feeling much better!
