I use them. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two models. I have the ones from a couple of years ago (I only use them in races) and they have a carbon fiber sole.

I used to use Sidi T2s. The only thing I noticed was the Specialized shoe has more toe room. The Sidi shoes get very narrow into the toe.

I have the experts. I believe the difference between the two is a carbon sole vs. not-carbon sole, the expert being the carbon one, but I could be wrong about that.

I really like the shoes. I also previously had Sidi's and really like the roomier toe box in the Specialized shoes. The Sidi toe is very tapered, the Specialized is more square, and there is more depth there, so room for insoles if you use them.

I have the Trivent Expert and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I wear them for all my rides and races. No hotspots, numbess, or rubbing.

I have the Experts. Have struggled to find the right place for the right cleat, moving it several times. At Xantusia yesterday for their advanced fit clinic, the guys all said what a mess those shoes are with the varus correction, and how frustrating it is for the average customer (me) who probably knows nothing about varus etc. They said it's not the cleat position, and they shimmed the right shoe for me. YMMV, but you are more knowledgeable than I am about bike stuff, so something at least to consider.

I've been in the TriVent since before they had two different models. As someone else said, the big difference is carbon vs non-carbon soles. Note: if you have neuroma(s) in your feet, the cheaper, less stiff non-carbon model may be better for you.

I've always been able to pick up these shoes new, unused on ebay or in the Specialized sale section for far less than the retail price. Sometimes I've even found my size over in the men's sale section, too. FWIW, I wear 6.5 in running shoes, and 37 in the TriVent.

I've got short, wide feet. These were the widest, small non-custom shoe I could find. The toe box can be stretched further by inserting a pinch clamp in handle side first. I also cut the bottom strap off to loosen that area up--and it's one less strap to fool with in transition!

No coasting in running and no crying in baseball

Thanks all! I think I'll go with the carbon soles for both these and their road shoes. I haven't bought new tri shoes since, oh, 1988 or so, so I think I can splurge!
