A set of Mad Fiber wheels were on the initial list of door prizes at the ST gathering in Kona on Wednesday. But the wheels or a Mad Fiber rep did not show up to the party, and thus were not given out.

Supposedly Mad Fiber is still operational. Just running on a skeleton staff.

They are done in the states. They do not want the news released because they are trying to save face. They do not have a location set up in Asia yet, and are very deep in trying to figure out what the hell they are doing. Case/ Devine has been lying (big surprise!) about keeping production going in the States. They are not helping in warranties or building new wheels currently.

Watching those old videos that Hjertberg posted when Mad Fiber launched, he made a compelling case for the wheels. To a lay person, Ric's engineering arguments seemed plausible. However, regardless of the arguments, exotic spoke-less $2,600 wheels were always going to be a niche-of-a-niche product. Add the fact that they had an extremely distinct look, questionable aerodynamics and the suspect crash worthyness inherent in any one-piece wheel design and they start looking like a niche-of-a-niche-of-a-niche. Dentists are just going to buy the 404s. Still, if nothing else they were certainly innovative and provocative.

My friend worked for them for a while and got fired after telling them how fucked up things were and that they'd better change what they were doing. I guess he was right.

They were very light, around 400g lighter than a zipp 404 tubular wheelset.

In a field sprint that would save you a couple watts, and of course it would be good uphill, so if their own wind tunnel test (http://www.slowtwitch.com/...ads/MadFiberTech.pdf) is to be believed, it might be the superior wheel sometimes.

I would be a little bit surprised if the aero was as close as their test indicated though.

Pointing out problems is useful, but finding solutions is even more useful. Maybe your friend did a little of each. Usually though just pointing out that "everything is fucked up" isn't constructive.

Having followed the company for a bit and worked for a dealer it seems to me things started to go downhill after they were acquired and production ramped up. We had only been a dealer for about the last 3 or 4 months and sold I think 5 sets in tubular and clincher and had to warranty 2 sets because they were out of true. Every single person who purchased a pair had nothing but excellent things to say about their performance. Its a shame things got away from them.

Some have earned their wheel sets, some have screwed me over.

I've had 2 root canals (both the dentist's fault), a handful of fillings (the dentist's fault), finishing up my third two-year treatment with orthodontics (the first was a waste of time, orthodontist's fault), had upper jaw surgery in August (genetics' fault, my surgeon did really well), and I get to have a sinus lift, 6 tooth implants, and a metric ass ton of cosmetic dentistry.

Some days I feel like I could do their job. I could absolutely be an orthodontic assistant. The amount of time I've spent in the chair is astounding.

Wow sounds like a big bag of hurt. Sorry you've had some mixed experiences. Like every other field, you have some hacks and some great ones. Personally, I HATE going and try to do most of the minor procedures myself using the mirror.

I have loved tubeless technology. I think it's misunderstood and under-valued. I longed for a nice, aero, race-worthy set of tubeless-compatible wheels (I'm not into the conversion kits that will allegedly make any wheel tubeless ... there are issues of the bead hook and sidewall that need to be right). I bought a set of Mad Fiber clincher wheels because they advertised being tubeless compatible. Got the wheelset and there was a note in the box saying I needed a special valve adapter and that I needed to call MF to get a set so I could run them as tubeless. So I had this gorgeous set of very expensive wheels that I couldn't ride. I called them and they said, "oh, we've decided they're not tubeless compatible afterall." WHAT!!! Thankfully, the dealer from whom I'd bought them knew I wanted them to run tubeless and understood. I returned the wheels and got a full refund. But not before I threw on some clinchers and took 'em for a 50 mile spin. HATED them!!! It was a breezy day and I got blown all over the place. Seemed like they wanted to pick up speed fast, but you had to work to hold it. And something about the carbon hub shell, I suspect, made the wheels sound very raspy ... like when your brakes are wearing in your car and they begin squealing. They had this raspy, irritating sound as they rolled. I didn't like them at all. But so what now, eh?

Very sad, we though sniffed the fish. Thus we did "not give away" the wheel set at the Kona gathering.
