"American Flyers" supposedly the best american movie ever made about bicycling is on ESPN Classic tonight at 8pm.

I've been waiting twenty years for this.

Great movie, albeit, now that I am a cyclist I can see the "holes" in it.

This was the Top Gun of cycling movies IMO. Made me want to ride soooo bad!

That movie almost made me cross over to road....(I was a BMX flatland freestyler who couldn't part wearing day-glow leathers.. on a GT performer with skyway tuff-wheels... ahhh, the good ol' days)...

Anyway, I crossed over eventually!!!

My friend worked on that film... he was hired to build most of the bikes and taught Ray Chong how to do that infamous "tech-support wheel change"... I bet that was fun...

would love to see it but considering the pats are playing against the steelers tonight, I'll probably have to miss.

I love the fact that they make the russian cyclist a big bear of a guy with a full beard--- I remember hearing about a screening of this movie (right before it came out in 1985) to the pros before the world championships-- and when the movie was over the russians were rolling on the floor laughing at how the Soviet rider was portrayed.

Breaking Away - a great movie and a movie that really motivated me to checking out road cycling, at least from the context and persepctive of beinga triathlete. This movie is in my all-time top ten movies.

It seems a little dated now, but the acting is outstanding.

i was interested to see that alexandra paul did the hawaii ironman in 13:18....also that one bike crash (right after Costner bleeding from the ears) wasn't staged...an extra just happened to crash hard on camera.

We have 'Breaking Away'. It's one of my son's favorite movies - he loves the dining hall brawl. So, my wife found 'American Flyers' on DVD. So we all sat down for theater night. What do we get? Alexandra Paul topless and then in bed with the kid. A little more than I care for my 8 yo son to see, otherwise a great movie.

BTW: I love in 'Breaking Away' where he's drafting the truck at, what, 60 MPH and he's on his small ring.

you will be sorely disappointed. a little good cycling, but as a film, it is very very poor. no plot as well. breaking away is 10 times better.

for sports films (real sports--swim, bike, run), one of the best is 'without limits', a running film about one of the fastest men in the world and the beginning of an american craze. there you will not be disappointed.

Where would you want to swim ?

Hey I am in that movie. We were watching the Classic when they filmed the Morgel Bismark stage. They panned the crown and we were in the film. You need a magnifying glass and stop action. It was pretty funny having to reset up everything for the fake finishes. Pretty cool being there, I thought the movie sucked.
