How much Tri Bike save your legs for Run?
Im new into Tri and Im buying my first bike, my goal is the long courses.
Reading some posts (tri bike vs road) I realized that is better to start with a road.
But there is a point not discussed on them:

How much Tri Bike save your legs for Run????
How big I will suffer if I run after do the bike with a road bike instead a Tri bike??

I don't have any exact, scientific #'s, but in my experience it's a significant difference. I think this difference is even more noticeable if you're a strong runner; the tri bike seat angle really does allow your hamstrings to work more, which means your quads don't have to work as much.

All that being said, if you know that you're going to be racing mostly long course, and $ isn't an issue, get a tri bike! I started off w/ a road bike last summer and have since spent several hundred dollars adding aerobars, bar end shifters, and a forward seat post(this also included several bike fittings). I more or less converted my road bike to a tri bike. Looking back, I wish I would have just waited another few months to save $ and get a tri bike.

Of course, you'll find a lot of people who agree and disagree with me. So my best advice is to read some other responses and then test ride road and tri bikes and decide for yourself

Tri bike saves your legs by making you more comfortable in a forward leaning position and reducing the drag of your body. And the frame helps a little. So if a tri bike saves you 10 min over 112 miles then that's 10 min less on the bike and thus saved for the run.

The whole recruiting different muscles is bogus but a faster bike or position does help run faster.

That's my thoughts too but not based on anything scientific I've done.

The science is geometry. Dan Empfield explained it best by describing a good road geometry fit and then rotating the hips and torso of the person around the bottom bracket.

Sometimes people close the hips more than the would when riding a road bike and gives people the sense of using different muscles but they don't, they're just not comfortable at that point. They can either get shorter cranks or open the hip angle.

It's true tht you aren't using different muscles, but certain muscles are being used on a different portion or a greater portion of the tension-length curve thus their ability to produce force is either decreased or improved. So it's really not about the muscles being used, but rather how the muscles are being used, if that makes sense.

Interesting observations in here. Regardless of a true TT bikes ability to preserve your quads and calves for the run, the fact that they keep you in a nice relaxed position will help your transition to the run psychologically. Running is so much form and function, and it is tremendously important to be relaxed especially doing anything over a half marathon. If a TT bike offers that over a road bike, then it's worth it IMO.

Why are you thinking of a road bike?

It looks like you know what you want to do with the bike so get yourself a tri bike and save yourself a lot of the hassle that you have to do with a road bike to convert it to a tri bike. Most bike shops try to get first timers into a road bike but I went the other way and got myself a tri bike. Took me a while to get used to but I was happy with my decision since I don't do any bike road racing or even group riding. You can get yourself a good entry level tri bike for less than $2k. Also, if you decide to go with a road bike, you will be talking about getting a tri bike as soon as you do your first tri race.

Will you suffer during the run? yes you will, you will be slower on a road bike and more miserable checking out all the other tri bikes and wishing you got a tri bike instead :)

The change in the range of motion is very small and "I believe" doesn't save your legs. I am a firm believer its all about reducing drag and being comfortable, that's how a tribike saves your legs.

There are a few people that have been on this forum for awhile who actually say thet ran better of a road bike. Also, look at some of the run time that were run off a road bike years ago. They were not any slower. Some people it may help some it does not.

The ITU guys and gals run pretty good. For triathletes, that is.

I have found it doesn't really matter which bike I ride. What does matter to me, is the bike course and amount of climbing I have to do.

How did you come up with 14.43? I ran the same calculations and came up with 14.21.

Of course, what seat angle did you use?

I am new to the sport going on year 4 now and I rode a cervelo s1 for the first 3 years and recently sold the bike and bought a tri bike cd01, I have only a few rides on the new bike as i just got it a couple weeks ago. I can say that the difference for me is quite noticable in the fact I felt stronger on my road bike in comparison to the new tri bike. I can only assume that it is because my muscles are indeed being used differently on the new geometry. I recently did a swim bike run workout and the run might have been a little easier but hard to tell. I am able to keep up the same speeds as I did on the cervelo which did have aero bars and was already very aero and had easton ec90tt wheels, new bike has reynolds strikes. I would say if your primary biking is going to be solo rides or small group rides with just a couple others in your group and your training routes are not in congested areas by all means get a tri bike. if you plan to do large group rides and your riding around with lots of traffic and stop lights then a tri bike might be a pain in the ass. I am learning all this now. tri bikes are for long straight stretches of road with little or no reason to need to stop abruptly.

Tri vs road --> has nothing to do with which leg muscles you use. Tri geometry makes it easier to stay in the aero bars for 5-7 hours, something that roadsters never have to do.

Elites have done well on both geometries.
