Chocolate milk = "nature's sports drink"

Got a kick out of this article on chocolate milk presented at a conference recently. Mostly what we already know, but would like to see statements based on studies with subject pools larger than n=32 and n=10.

Might not be as clever an idea after the milk bakes inside a bottle for half a day...

Wow, I grew up on a 3000 acre farm in Indiana and we didn't a single cow that produced "low fat chocolate" milk.

There is nothing natural about milk processed to that level. Hell, HFCS probably gets processed less that low fat chocolate milk.

And while you're at it, have the cows leave out the lactose!

I'm actually annoyed at my kid's football coach about this subject. We encourage our kids to drink water instead of sugary sports drinks drinks. We've taught them that when they're REALLY working hard, they can have PowerAid Zero (yes electrolytes, no sugar, no calories). These are kids, after all, and a "hard workout" for them lasts 45-60 minutes, consuming calories isn't the issue like it is in endurance sports.

Anyway, my son's coach told all the players he "wanted them drinking chocolate milk" because it's a "great recovery drink". Now my son (who's an impressionable 13 year old) wants to suck down 2000 calories of Nestle NesQuick (i.e. sugar) every day. Sigh. We're working on re-programming him.

Keep fighting the good fight - all of us w/ kids have to do our bit to get the next generation a little less dumb fat and lazy than ours!

ADM is behind this. We need an 'informant' to give us an insider's opinion on this. ;-)

Here is a good article comparing chocolate milk to one of the recovery supplement drinks out there. While Alan can be very preachy and not be objective on certain things, he writes a good article.

You know, I just read a story where, in China, they have taken human DNA and mixed it with Holstein DNA. They then implanted the embryos into dairy cows. They now claim that the milk produced is 80% like human breast milk. Why not drink that instead? They do say breast is best.
