HR Monitor - strap fit issues
My wife is trying to use an old Polar HR monitor of mine.
Any tricks to get the strap to fit in the correct place? Does she need to wear a sports bra? (instead of conventional)

Looking for any tips you have!

Yes definitely sports bra. It should fit snugly, but not breath constricting. You should be able to fit 2 fingers or so between strap and skin. I wear mine so that it is flush wit the sports bra's elastic, and that is what is holding it in place.

The transmitter could probably be worn a little loose having the sports bra keeping it in place and snug, well that is what I am told since I am a male :) Not sure how old the Polar unit is but if the transmitter dies, convert over to a Polar Wear Link

Let her know that may take a while to get used to it/adjust. I've been using one for years now and somedays it just bugs me. I had a hard time getting the right tightness-not so tight that it would constrict my breathing, not too loose that it would fall down. Some days it would chaffe me. Depending on the shirt/sportsbra I wear, it needs to be tighter/looser.

So no strap on the trans.? Just use the sports bra to hold it in place?

One thing I noticed - the strap seems long/wide around her ribs (compared to when it's on me).
Does that matter? I assume as long as it is "on" her chest flush so the contacts are there...?

It's maybe 5-6 yrs old, new trans and new batteries within last 6 months. It works fine on me! :-)

You still wear the strap, the sports bra just assists in holding it in place. It is very important that the band of the sports bra is not too tight, or adding the HRM strap underneath it may cause chaffing.

The Polar transmitters should be worn just under the breast, on the sternum area. Our current Wear Link transmitter fits very well and comes with $100 units and $400 units. Polar did make a sports bra where you would you slide the t-31 type transmitter through the openings with no elastic piece. Now Polar makes a cardio bra that uses the battery piece that snaps on the bra from the Wear Link. My experience is athletes wear it too low or do not moisten it.

Definitely use the strap and after nursing 4 kids my "girls" are much lower than most here but I still have no problem with the transmitter. Mine fits perfectly under any bra/top - I don't wear the strap directly under the bra elastic but just above it, using the bra elastic to keep everything up there. At least that's how I remember it. I don't really pay much attention. Now you're going to make me want to try it and see.

I've never used a sports bra with a wire. Just regular ones.

I've never used a wire bra with mine... that just sounds painful!! But then again, I don't really have the assets to necessitate that...

I just wear the strap snugly below (not underneath) my sports bra elastic. It seems to work well right there and I usually forget it's on me.

Ok, getting back to this, the polar strap goes just above the bra elastic (for me) but as you can see, others do it differently.

I wear my heart rate monitor so the HR strap is under the lower band of my sport bra. The sport bra holds it in place nicely and then the HR strap doesn't slip down or move around. I couldn't image ever working out in a conventional bra.
