Carl you been fantastic and really appreciate you following up asking how my visit went.

My local Trek dealer is a great bunch of guys and have been extremely helpful to me in the past for wrench issues. I want to give them my business.

The problem is that they don't seem to know a lot about the bike. Which makes me a tad uncomfortable. I planned on just calling Trek corporate today and see if I could get some questions answered. The two biggest questions I have are:

1) They told me frameset only is available in White, gray and black. Not available in all black.

2) Complicated question. They did not seem to be clear exactly what was needed to run Di2 on the 9.9. So I have been trying to figure it out. Here is the list I have put together but want someone who knows to check it:

1) Rear Derailieur 7970
2) Front Derailleur 7970
3) TT Shift SW-7971
4) Brake levers ST-7971
5) Di2 Battery
6) Battery charger
7) Di2 internal cable for Derail junction box - EW-7975. Does not seem to be length driven like external ones
8) Trek proprietary battery mount hardware same as one for Madone
9) Trek proprietary special rear brake cover

Curious if I missed anything? Also my understanding is the first 7 items are not specific to Speed Concept only items 8 and 9. If this would be better answered through PM or phone call to Trek let me know.

I really, really appreciate all the value you have provided on the forum Carl.
...

thought they built di2 at the factory,,,r u saying it di2 wuold be a build?

Your Paint looks great!!!How do ya like the shifting?

couldn't be more impressed with the shifting. the only problem is i kept forgetting that i had shifters in the pursuit position and reached up to the aero bars to shift anyway.

first ride notes, impressions and questions:

- really like the adjustability of the aero bar, very nice

- had to take the draft box off to get my powertap wheel to spin. the bolt that attached it was unbelievably tight. does it need to be this tight to prevent it from coming loose and rubbing the tire? (wondering about this for when i try to put it back on) is the box important for aerodynamics? i like the way the bike looks a lot better without the box anyway, it doesn't hold as much as my regular seat bag, and i'm not too excited about putting it on/taking it off after each race. i guess they are making a new version of this box that solves the rubbing issue. will it be free for current owners?

- pursuit position is not very comfortable for me, bar is too low and too far forward with the 65/10 stem. it makes me wonder if i could do a hilly IM or half on this bike. ymmv.

I thought the same thing about the base bar height.when I first rode the bike, I felt that the bars were way too low & that I wouldn't be able to climb. After a couple of weeks on the bike I feel really comfortable.I even cancelled the order for a higher stem.the aerobars have a Ton of adjustability.ride it for a while then see what you think.

Couple of questions:

1- is there a service manual for this bike?
2- do you just pop a plug to install cyclometer sensor? anything to watch for?
3- do those twist computer mounts work well? Is there a better mount for the cyclometer [garmin]
4- do you lock up your bike in your own garage, if so, which lock and why?
5- does anyone use 700x25 tires?
6- do people post images of their bikes, or just find them here and there?

Finally a design question:

Why have both handlebar and aerobars? why no just take of the hand width handlebar and mount the brakes on the
aerobar? [hopefully not messed up by terminalogy. handlebar here is the base aerobar and aerobar is the arm rest]

Not only is it awkward to shift from weight on arms to grabbing the brake lever. Why not have the brake level
on the same piece of material as the aero shifter and instead of having 4 parts sticking out in the wind only have
2 parts.

This is a strange bike. Pending no rain, first ride is tomorrow.

So... this is your first time ever seeing a tri bike? Or do I misunderstand your question?

I'm thinking the same thing...

No it's not the first time. But tri bikes seem focused on doing all to get the most speed possible. I have never seen an explanation
of why there are separate base bar with brake levers and arm rests with shifters. Why have four bars when two would suffice if someone
integrated them? There would be slightly less weight and much less resistance.

Handling the bike on hills and corners are the reason for having a base bar.

In the absence of any hills of note or sharp corners you might be right - see Natascha Badmann's setup for Hawaii a few years ago - no base bar and no visible brake levers (they were twistgrip brakes).

However that would restrict the courses where you could use your spangly new tri bike, unless you are very good at handling everything a course could throw at you whilst remaining on the tribars.

Thanks, so it's an issue of handling and not rules and regs. Good to know. I was just curious, and at little annoyed with how hard it is to retrain the body to twist around to get the brakes working.

1- is there a service manual for this bike?
Yep. Go to http://www.trekbikes.com/...t_Service_Manual.pdf

2- do you just pop a plug to install cyclometer sensor? anything to watch for?
There is a plug in the non drive side chainstay that you pop and place a duo tap sensor... here is one that works - http://www.bontrager.com/model/08298

3- do those twist computer mounts work well? Is there a better mount for the cyclometer [garmin]
I used a twist mount for my cateye for 2 years. No issues. Now I'm experimenting on how I'm going to mount my garmin on the SC bars.

4- do you lock up your bike in your own garage, if so, which lock and why?
A bike this expensive should not be left in a garage. I have a seperate insurance policy for my bikes that might not pay if it was just left in my garage. I would keep the bike behind something more secure than a garage door.

5- does anyone use 700x25 tires?
Not many people use 700x25 due to the higher rolling resistance from a tire that wide.

6- do people post images of their bikes, or just find them here and there?
There are posts out there where images are posted. I use google images for my bike porn.

Agreed on most counts except the 25c tire part. 25c tires usually roll as well as their 23 counterparts but are less aerodynamic

Yeah I meant higher drag / less aero. It is actually arguable regarding rolling resistance and that is affected by tire pressure and road conditions.

.

We have State Farm. I have double checked with them and they don't require a separate rider on the policy for the bike. Just price documentation.
I'll probably get a good lock anyway.

Thanks for mentioning the concern.

Has anyone used a Fizik Tri 2 with Carbon Braided rails on the Speed Concept? I've heard the rails don't fit on all seat post clamps, just wanted to see if they are compatible.

Thanks!

You've got to get the larger seat post clamp. I have the carbon rail seat and it required a swap of parts.

I was thinking about doing this but have a few questions:

- Did you only change the clamps or the whole seatpost head?
- Did you buy it from the Trek / Bontrager website?
- Did it fit the Arionne 2 with carbon rails?
- Any issues with the fit?

Thanks for your response.

The LBS ordered the clamp only for me. It just has larger slots for the rails. Yes, I have the tri2 with carbon rails. No issues with fit after they installed the part.

I think I'm leaning towards the Speed Concept rather than the Shiv, as the SC seems so much more adjustable at the front end, and I'm trying to work out what frame and stem size I need.

I've looked at the info here:
http://www.slowtwitch.com/...0_Geometry_1383.html
and also the geometry data on the Trek site:
http://www.trekbikes.com/...pt_9/speedconcept99/

What I need to know is where the pads end up relative to the frame stack and reach figures, once you've added on the stem figures. The most likely option looks to be the medium frame with frame stack 51.7 reach 40.8, and the 100 x 10 stem. Can anyone tell me where the pads will be at the lowest and furthest forward position, or even just a general formula for pad position relative to the frame and stem figures?

I ordered mine from LBS here in South Carolina and got it in 9 days. That was Oct. 15th. Size L frame. Fit has been no problem and ride is far better than my Pinarello FP8.

I found page 9 of the doc above to be pretty good at showing what size bike and stem will offer what arm pad stack height. I think it was off by maybe .5cm compared to my experience.

Hi Steve-

If you know your pad stack and reach (measured to top-center of pad) you can use our 9-series fit chart to back out the stem and frame size options available to you. Here's a link to the process and the chart.

As an example, my own PS & PR are about 620mm and 465mm respectively. Gives me several options, but the one I prefer is the Medium with 100x45 and no spacers. I've been rolling around on the 100x10 with 35mm of spacers for a month or so just to see what a lower basebar is all about, but my pad position doesn't (need to) change with the stem change. I just slide the pad mounts back 1cm on the extensions and end up right where I was on the 100x45.

Thanks Carl (and Runless), exactly the info I wanted, I thought it must be out there somewhere.

I have to say, I am very impressed at the quality of information that Trek has put out about the SC. It shows a real thoroughness and attention to detail, and definitely inspires confidence in the product.

Haven't dialed in the settings & install bar tape.
I think I will need the longer stem, hoping it will be available soon.
How did the others get the lower & higher stems? On order?
Looking forward to ride tomorrow.

Looks great. Is that a Bontrager bottle up front? How is it mounted?
