vertical or horizontal?

i'll have to take a picture of my fork, but there are two horizontal "cracks" that extend backwards along the fork. On the left side it runs nearly the whole depth of the fork, and on the right side it runs about 50% back.

Interestingly it lines up exactly with the top of the front break cover.

Just an astestic paint crack - or a structural crack?

Mine was horizontal. Push on it bit, if it feels softer than the otherside it may be a crack.

Hmm.

These didn't turn out as I'd hoped - will have to try for better; this is the left side; on the right side it is there in the same place but only runs about 50-60% of the depth of the fork:

It is not a smooth crack (as in paint under the clear coat) - if you run your finger along it - you can feel it.

Here's a bit better one.

Gonna run into the LBS with it tomorrow and see what they think and compare it to the SCs they have in stock.

Carl any thoughts?

Hate finding/dealing with stuff like this. Just something I don't need or want to worry about.

oh ya, that looks like mine. If you push down on the bars just standing can you make it squeak. Does it feel weak? Coincidentally mine didn't show up until stems were swapped as well. Regardless of what happens don't delay on this. I took mine in July 23rd and there is no estimate to when I am to get it back. I have been told there are NO forks and that I'm the next one as soon as they get more but I have already decided that I will most likely be riding my TTX @ Louisville IM in two weeks. Unfortunate, but I am thankful because I was so close to selling the TTX and then I would have been really screwed. I'll check back for updates from you but curious to hear what your LBS decides. Hope for the best and that it is only cosmetic. On other notes, did you have to pay for the new stem, or did your LBS swap that out?

it doesn't squeak while standing there (with me trying to move it/etc), but the headset feels loose (even though tightened to spec).

It did squeak a bit on the trainer today.

Guess I'll go to the LBS and see what kind of sweet talking I can do.

happy F'ing day with Pigman in a week and IMWI shortly after that.

I DON't want to ride my dual at IMWI (or pigman).

Look at it this way... You could have noticed it checking in your bike at 4:00 pm at @IMOO. That would be screwed. I should know, with 15 mins before 70.3 Austin checkin I discovered a crack in my TTX. Thankfully Mellow Johnny's and Lance hooked me up with a white Livestrong TTX and then spent 2 hours changing all dimensions to my exact bike -- was a little stressed, but all worked out in the end.

I changed my stem from 60/45 to 100/45 and then rode it for a day without a problem. The next day I had major creaks and noises that I couldn't figure out. After eliminating the possibilities that it came from the Bottom bracket or seatpost I brought it back to the bike shop and they did a thorough check. Found out that it was the fork and headset assembly. They tightened everything there and the creaks disappeared. Unfortunately the headset assembly is so tight right now that I plan to loosen it.

Who said there are no available forks? Is that confirmed? My fork, from day 1 has been uneven, meaning the alignment of the front wheel is dished to one side. I was hoping to bring it back to the shop to order a new fork, however, I don't want the bike sitting there while I wait for the fork to arrive.

Please keep us updated on your "issues". My objective is not to criticize the bike / company because I seriously love my Speed Concept. My objective is just to make it better.

I have the same objective - I like Trek and I like their products but there have been issues and my guess is there are going to be more issues. This should be WARNING to anyone thinking of any of the new uber bikes, especially the ones rushed to market and NOT just Trek.

To directly answer your question this comes from Trek Customer Service and Warranty Department. I was told mid last week and I was also told I can call up again this week and check the status further. At the time no date could be given but it was reiterated that they have sold more Speed Concepts than TTXs. They had Trek World going on last week as well and I was told everyone was out of the office for annual sales meetings. To add to the issue you had, well I had a problem where my QR would slip even after being tightened appropriately. I have never had a front wheel skewer ever slip, but it was easy to replicate just by pressing the wheel laterally a couple of times and it would pop loose. I don't have the fork so I can't tell if there is some misalignment on mine but you have me interested now.

I have not been happy with the response on this from Trek. IMO it is me pushing this process forward and not the other way around. I feel like it is a nuisance to ask the Trek LBS again about the matter so that is why I have been talking directly to Trek HQ. IMO you don't pay top dollar for a bike and then start having all sorts of issues - there is a reason lemon laws were developed and right now I feel like I got a lemon and Trek's lack of attention to the matter is a little bizarre. We are talking about bikes that cost almost as much as a car. If I worked at Trek I would pickup the phone and start finding out when more forks would be available and then get back to the person. Start by calling manufacturing and work from there. Telling a person there is no date and just leaving it at that is not an appropriate response IMO. Maybe others are more reasonable than me.

In another note, I seriously think that I have to have two Tri bikes at all times now because you never know what is going to happen and how long it is going to take.

Bike is at the @ LBS and checked out by their Sales/factory rep and the owner + a couple guys there.

Verdict is that it is just a paint crack and not structural - and the creaking was from something in the stem/headset being loose.

The LBS tightened everything up and they weren't happy with the feel/result - so the Rep is helping them warranty out the headset (don't know exactly what pieces) - with the hopes that resolves the creak (in combination of tightening everything).

At this point - things are progressing satisfactorarily. LBS expects to have me back on the road on Thursday so I'll update than hopefully.

That said if the headset replacement/tightening solves the issue - I'm still left with an ugly fork that I'll push to get replaced.

Thanks for the update. Much appreciated. I will try to work out some issues with my SC privately with Trek and am pretty confident I can find a resolution. Mine are not major issues and I raise them only to make the bike better.

Concur. And I'd love to help change that, but it wouldn't really be fair to post any of my own pics. I don't technically own any of the rigs I ride now or rode during development. They don't quite rise to the level of pjorn either. Most of them anyway. I mean, this isn't exactly a glamour shot:

("my" 9-series was needed for the Di2 manual photo shoot but I didn't want to ride it in, tear it down, build it back up...so I towed it in with a 7-series proto)

What?!! The Trek kid carrier not good enough for you?

Questions for Carl and other SC experts.

I will be placing my order for the SC tomorrow. I am going with the 9.9 in small. I plan on getting the 100/10 stem.

I haven't read much of anything, or been able to find anything pertaining to seatpost offset choice. I have narrowed it down to the 275mm post. However haven't decided on 35mm or 10mm offsets. Treks Sizing Chart states the 10 mm for (majority of tri fits) and 35 mm for (extreme tri and UCI Compliant). This makes me lean more towards the 10mm, as most of my races will be triathlon specific with a few usac/uci tt's.

Just wanted to get the expert opinion and see what others have been getting before I make the big decision.

Thanks!

- Jake

This is what the 10 mm offset seatpost looks like. Compare it to the more extreme 35 mm posts you see on most speed concept pictures here. I changed to the 10 mm because my saddle pretty much sits on the center of the post.

Hi fellas,

I must say the crack that some of us are experiencing (me included) is nothing to worry about. I checked out 3-4 other SC display bikes at my LBS. All of them have that "crack" that we have been discussing about. It is probably part of the design of the frame, my LBS opinions align with mine too.

So not to worry! Go out there and ride!

that may be, it's just fugly as hell and in a really prominant spot! :)

Just to make sure we're on the same page, this "crack" is the faint diagonal line that seems to continue linearly with the top gap of the front brake housing, correct?

I believe in the clearest picture shown above, it runs diagonally from the bottom left corner of the picture to a third down from the top right corner.

More horizontal than diaganal, but yes - it's effectively a continuation of the "seam" between the brake shroud, and the fork.

As I said - I'm cool with it - it's just fugly, and I would be unhappy about buying a bike off the floor in that condition - I mean heck I'm unhappy having it after 5 weeks of ownership :)

But I am glad it is not structural.

The +/-10mm head covers the heart of the tri range, at least as generally accepted here on Slowtwitch, from about 78-81 effective STA, with the saddle more or less in the middle of the rails. It is not likely to get you to a UCI-compliant 5cm saddle-nose-behind-BB position, though. Early users (like istanford) who did need to get there found they needed the +/-35mm head mounted rearward and saddle slammed all the way back on the rails. Conversely, with some saddles like the ISM Adamo you may not be able to get the post into your favorite steep tri position when using the 35mm in either orientation, and this is when the 10mm is called for. The heads are available separately through your Trek dealer in case you want or need to have both on hand.

How is a paint crack a part of the design of the frame? Regardless, my paint crack turned into a real crack and it has been 27 days w/o my speed concept now. Paint cracks happen at locations where there is more stress, places that are stressed can fail.

Not sure about your paint crack. But for me, it's more of like a very slight linear protrusion, and the line (or crack) can only be seen at certain angles of light. If I could describe it in an analogy, it's nearly like a seam.

Is this the same as what you have?

I will repeat - at that same point my fork cracked. There is no question about it, If I had a picture or video I would show it to you, but the bike has been out of my hands since the incident and is currently sitting at a Trek dealer. It was not like a tiny-weeny crack either, I'm just glad I wasn't bombing down a hill and then all of sudden hit a bump and then have a catastrophic failure resulting in a bad crash. Using your analogy of a seam, when you have a piece of clothing that starts to fail, where does it usually fail? The answer is the seam. I'm not sure how the fork is built but maybe there is a seam there.

i'm somewhat unimpressed by my SC. nightmare to build and cable. same crack in the head tube. cables aren't long enough as standard to cable easily so need tandem ones (M with 100/10). the bolts on the rear brake fairing have rusted (one wet ride and cleaned straight afterwards!), several bolts have rounded very easily, the brake shoe (rear) shattered under load!!! (shagged a wheel).

its not good. time for an email to trek!

I recently took delivery of my SC, probably one of the first in the UK. after some initial teething troubles. Mainly as the LBS had struggled with getting the cabling sorted correctly, so it had to be re cabled with a bit of direction form Trek technical department in UK.
I had noted that as mentioned a few of the allen bolts in the bar set up were pretty soft, and even with care and a torque wrench they appeared to begin to round, luckily no disasters.
Had 3 races on it now, after a few tweaks, and have to say, it is just fantastic to ride. Really positive feel, Love it.
It has been helpful reading all your posts on this thread, and picked up a few tips regarding set up.
The one thing I have been having a problem with - Getting my cycle ops turbo trainer to locate in rear drop out on the drive side without putting pressure or damaging the drop out. Could anyone tell me if they have had similar problems, or what skewer or trainer they have managed to fit without trauma.
