Hi Bob-

Sorry to hear about the post slipping. Carbon assembly paste and the max recommended torque of 11Nm - which is a lot more than most non-shop people are used to and hard to accurately gauge without a torque wrench - should've taken care of it.

PM me with your details and let's see what else I might be able to come up with.

Hi Carl,

Did the Ironman Lake Placid and everything went pretty well with the bike (and overall race). Flatted in the second lap and the Kamm tail box served me well as I had my tubulars and all my doodads in it. Already put over 1,000 miles on my SC and I need to send an updated review of the bike. Been having some brake glitches (front and rear) but nothing I couldn't handle as a wrench. The aero brakes are nice and seamless from the outside but the center pull design could use some improvements. Will get into more details on that in my updated review. My fork is not even - meaning the wheel is tilted 2mm to one side and it has been like this from the beginning. Tried different wheelsets and even inverted wheels to see if the dish on wheels were wrong. Nope - problem is with the fork. Could be resolved by dremelling the bottom to make it even or even putting a shim on one side but I would like to get your opinion on this first.

will post pictures with my review. Just give me a few days as I have a lot of office work.

P;)

"I tried to start a post about the latest one today and then one of the admins deleted it."

i deleted your post, because, it was not helpful in any technical way, rather a whine about a statement by a trek customer service person (who was absolutely spot-on correct) that anybody who buys the very first version of a brand new style stands a higher risk of something being found out that 40 field trialers didn't find out. as you note, ask anyone who's purchased an iphone 4.

we don't do trial by internet here. if you absolutely need to vent about trek, then, there are plenty of other sites that will let you do so. trek has absolutely the best customer service and warranty service in the bike business. if i were still in the business of making and selling bikes, i'd happily give you your money back, and resell your bike to somebody who deserves it. otherwise, if what you want is consistently good customer service (notwithstanding your current snafu) you have a bike with precisely the correct headbadge on it.

furthermore, if i delete one of your posts, it doesn't mean you keep posting what it is i feel is better not on this site. i think you made good initial decisions by choosing trek and slowtwitch. it's possible you might have acted hastily.

Dan,

I agree with some of what you said and in the past I have had good experiences with Trek warranty but that was on mainstream products. With your reviews and others it has only be showing one side, and this is for most people who just get the bike off the shop floor and ride. But once you start riding it you start noticing various problems IMO. Like the poster above who said that they started having "brake issues". I think it is important for people to understand that what they are purchasing is a great piece of engineering but still needs some polishing and unless you are a great wrench or willing to take a risk that maybe you should evaluate being that early adopter. Me and you agree on the return part, but saying that I don't deserve it is a low-blow and is not taking the high-road. You don't even know me, for all you know I could be the next Chris. Yes it is a true I expect great things from my products and great customer service. Part of this comes from my philosophy as a 24/7 on-call medical device rep. If you worked in that industry you would know that the sales guys give better customer service than pretty much any other job in the world.

As a recommendation to you and slowtwitch I personally think that there should be a separate category for "admin deletes" so everyone can see exactly the kind of stuff you are deleting. That would be a step forward in transparency on the site. I think this is especially important because I have seen many Trek advertisements as of late and I believe in transparency to avoid conflicts of interest. And my previous post was not a whine, it was posed as a question - seeking the advice of my peers. I was very careful to word that post, and it was an honest legitimate question regarding what I should do with my bike at this point in time.

Ok my turn to play. Based on others fit coordinates I think I know the answer, but I would like some more input.

Currently on a medium TTX, but should probably be on a large.

APR: 490
APS: 640
BBR: 670
BBS: 620
Saddle: 810

I like my current fit, but would like to be a little more forward on the saddle and bars and drop the front end a tad too.

Thanks for any input.

Medium TTX drivers always seem to be a coinflip when it comes to M vs L SC frames. Maybe because the Medium TTX falls right in between those two on a stack and reach plot (white dot between the purples).

So surprise surprise, I get a solution in both sizes for you. M+100x45 and L+100x10. Both have about the same room to move down at the pads but both are also already significantly below your current BBS @ 575 and 564 respectively. Reach-wise the Large setup is closest to current at the pads and your future desires move things even closer to nominal, while the Medium starts to creep out towards the edge of its APR envelope. What the Medium has going for it though, is a better BBR match to current @678, which may do a better job of mitigating any negative effects of the big BBS drop than the Large BBR @706. To summarize:

-pad location present and future is achievable with both...but edge to the Large on APR
-basebar position better approximated by the Medium, but both are lower and longer vs current

Either way you're dealing with a hefty BBS drop of 45-56mm, so if that doesn't scare you off it boils down to whether or not +8mm of BBR on the M+100x45 is enough to accommodate your future forward moves (I'm thinking of knee clearance). +36mm BBR on the L+100x10 might be a lot to swallow right away, but it's the solution with the most room to move.

An "owners thread" without pics is super gay. I'm starting to think these bikes don't even exist. C'mon people...

Ya.... I clicked on here to see some Trek porn. Seems all these speed concept owners have seen one up close. Maybe a bit to close. I am not talking about bikes either ;o)

Concur. And I'd love to help change that, but it wouldn't really be fair to post any of my own pics. I don't technically own any of the rigs I ride now or rode during development. They don't quite rise to the level of pjorn either. Most of them anyway. I mean, this isn't exactly a glamour shot:

("my" 9-series was needed for the Di2 manual photo shoot but I didn't want to ride it in, tear it down, build it back up...so I towed it in with a 7-series proto)

I'll give you a pic, but don't go telling me to paint the fence please...

First the old bike. I have been riding a Trek Equinoix 9.9 for about 5 years. Very happy with the bike, and once wrecked it and Trek backed it up with a solid crash program that allowed me to buy a new frame at a really good price. I am loyal, for they have been good to me. And they build a great bike.

I rode a size small TTX, (I am 5' 8", 32 inseam), but my shop ordered a medium a couple of months ago after going over the numbers with Trek. I am a pretty good AG'er, but won't be going to Kona anytime soon. My style is hanging on the nose, get comfortable, and ride hard. When I started reading the threads here on small vs medium for people my size, I unloaded a few "I think we made mistake" comments on my bike shop to maybe clear the way for a reorder if I was not completely happy. They were very confident, and they have been very good to me as well. So I stopped reading here, because it was not helping. I just wanted to trust LBS and of course Trek.

When I saw the bike assembled, I thought the top tube was longer than I would like, but it must be an optical illusion, because I understand it is very minimal from a small. But I swear it looked like a 56 frame. My bike has a 110 stem, and an SMP Glider shoved as far forward as it can go. I dropped the pads down to 1 full spacer in between the cradle and base. The key to my fit was I had maxed the seatpost, and wanted to get a little higher because the SMP seat lowers me when I am moving and grooving off the nose. My LBS swapped out the med seat post for a large, and that put max line back inside where it belonged. I test rode and smiled. This is a very fast bike. Much stiffer than the old TTX. More P like for sure. And this 5' 8" and a smidge frame fits perfectly for me at age 52.

I still have some things to do. I'm not sure on hydration yet. I have a PT on my training and race wheels, so I am anxious to see how the Garmen 705 performs. It looks cool, and will probably remount on an aero speed bottle. Accessories are expensive and make this bike, already costly, extremely out of reach. In many ways unjustifiable. But I have always owned the best Trek has made. I passed on the SSL, and waited two years for the SC. I think I made the right move.

On the trainer, I'm back on the SMP a little. Out on the road, I have a comfortable 90 degree arm rest for the first time in my life. It should make you medium dudes happy to know that this bike feels great for me. Forget all those numbers. Carl knows his stuff. A good LBS fit, and you will be in business. For me, Brielle Cyclery totally rocks the Trek SC world here in NJ.

I'll follow up here after Augusta 70.3. And maybe while there find another SC owner to compare notes and experiences. Good luck to all those waiting patiently for the SC.

has anyone had to make the decision between a 9.5 and a 7 series + race wheels + powertap? If I spend just over 5K on the bike that will use all my budget. Assuming the fit will be good on both do the advantages of the 9 series make more difference than adding race wheels to a 7 series?

And the question remains. where were you.

T3,

I am in the same boat as you in terms of sizing. This bike has been posted on here a long time ago but I figure i'll put it up again as people are starting to post more pictures now.

I am 5'8'' and on a Medium SC. Really love the rig. My inseam is a tad shorter than yours is so right now with my limited time (a little over 1year riding a bike) seat post is shorter and the aero bars are in a less aggressive position as it has been set up in Ironman distance mode. As I will be racing more 70.3's next year if all goes to plan I hope to get a more aggressive fit in the off-season to get used to come next Spring.

Anyways, I love the Di2 on your ride, very jealous. I did see that you threw on the s bends. I have really not been a fan of the ski bars as I my previous bike had s-bends. Was the installation of the s-bends a fairly easy process. I have ordered the cobra t2's in white like a fellow ST'er in this post did. I can't wait to get them on!

The green is awesome! But you gotta get a wheelcover man, especially for those long races.

Unless you are in my agegroup of course.

You comments might be more valuable if you provided a specific detail.

I have had my SC for about 5 weeks and am very happy with it.

My biggest issue is that since I swapped from the 60/45 stem last week to the 100/45 stem, I have been struggling to solve a creak that is now in the stem/headset/handlebar assembly.

Oh that and a slight paint chip just behind the seat post and on the lawyer tabs of the fork. The one on fork I expected - the one near the seatpost looks like a mold flaw.

IOW - very very happy except for a few pesky things that I consider no biggie (well the mold "flaw" I'm not super duper happy about - and may dig into once the race season is over)

That's the night I brought it home - the cabling ugliness has been fixed :)

Will take a picture since I put on the new stem. Have some nice lime green bar tape for it. I also am going to get some sweet green speedplay pedals and going to talk the bike shop into ordering me one of the adamo demo sadles (black with green trim).

You may want to check the fork stem handlebar assembly more closely. Mine started creaking out of the blue and I found a crack in my fork.

I'll check it through, but I'm pretty sure it has to do with swapping the stem and not tightening things back up right.

I had the creak silenced for a long ride on friday, but than decided I had the headset a little to tight - and in loosening that up - now the creak is back just slightly.

Thanks for the tip though will look into it.

ALso - where abouts was the crack?

left leg fork right at the point where the fork starts sloping towards the middle. Your creak could be anything but just thought I would mention it. I honestly thought my crank/bb was loose when my creaking started - thankfully I got off the bike and inspected it further. With this new super bike I would recommend a torque wrench as a must if you don't already have one.
