"New" Tri Cal Alcatraz race
So I am a little unclear on this race. Is this in addition to the Escape race Tri-Cal has run as third party RD? Will there now be three Alcatraz races (if you inlcude EnviroSports even)? And $320 for an slightly expanded Oly race...yikes!

$320 is the earlybird rate until January 1! Wow! I would like to do this race, but will have to consider this fee. And I'm not one to normally whine about race fees. I guess if it fills, they made the right call on the demand curve.

As a Bay Area resident I'm both proud and lucky to have this/these events near my hometown, but wonder if three different races will ultimately take away from such a special and seminal race?

TriCal has no affiliation with the Escape From Alcatraz anymore.

Why wouldn't you include envirosports? They are the original. And a very well run race, and very affordable.
I would highly recommend their race, it's got a little more of a grassroots feel, which triathlon is totally lacking anymore.
Harder bike course (even though shorter) than the others.

Wasn't this year their race a duathlon or just a run? I know there were issues with some leg of it and it wasn't a tri.

Cal Trans pulled their bike course permit due to road work in the Presidio a week before the race so this year the race was a swim/run Duathlon.

$320, Are you kidding me? I would never pay that for an Oly. Ridiculous.

Surprised that yesterday's article missed that there are in fact FOUR Escapes now. And it left out the "real" original. www.dcefat.com

The original Escape is not Tri California's or Dave Horning's race. It is the course run by the Dolphin Club and the South End Rowing Club starting in 1981. The 30th "original" Escape will be run by those two clubs on October 2, 2010. Racers swim from Alcatraz to Aquatic Park; bike to Mill Valley in Marin County; and run the 14-mile, 4400-feet-elevation-gain Double Dipsea Trail.

You do have to be a member of one of the two clubs to participate, and there's a cap of 50 people. The grassroots vibe is awesome. No high reg fees, no course closures, no spectators; but plenty of excellent support, including the best safety boat pilots in the business, and several aid stations on the Dipsea course.

I don't mean to say there is/will be anything wrong with the other three Alcatraz courses. I did Tri California's race three years ago and thought it was extraordinarily well organized with an amazingly scenic course. Just wanted to set history straight here. And I no longer have any motive to compete in a $300-$400 event now that I can do the grassroots version and kill my legs with a lot of hilly trail running training :)
