Body Changes After Pregnancy

How much did your body change after being pregnant? Was your body close to the same before pregnancy? What can you expect to happen?

I think it depends on how active you are during your pregnancy and also on whether you are the type of person who can lose weight easily. I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight in about 3 weeks but that was also some muscle loss. My body doesn't look quite as firm as it used to (I have a 2.5 month old and ended up having an emergency c-section so I'm only now getting to do stomach exercises). My "girls", well I don't think they will ever be the same. They are taking a real beating with all of this breast feeding. As for fitness, for me biking and swimming have come back faster than running.

it took a long time for me to have my body resemble its old self but now except for some slight changes it does. -

once a baby goes through your hips are permanently wider (vaginal delivery) kind of physics at play. The skin on my abdomen has been stretched out - so it just looks different than before. And well after nursing 2 kids the girls are a deflated version of their formal selves....

it depends on how long you breastfeed (for me it meant holding onto 5 pounds of fat on my thighs) and then how quickly you get pregnant again (the weekend I stopped nursing both times for me) and then I had pregnancy losses, one rather late, so my body was just in this permanent state of growing babies and feeding them.

but it does come back.....

Thanks for the responses so far. Do your guys/husbands/significant others undertand that this is what happens to a woman's body when they have babies?

Yes, we know....or should know, and accept it. My GF has/had three kids and I think she looks terrific. Sure, three pregnancies have changed her body but she still looks hot to me (my guy friends concur) , and her girls are awesome!

oh yeah.

my ex was really good that way. Actually one of the reasons I did not work out much was he liked me softer.....so after divorce was when I recaptured my athlete self....

I used to do obstetrics - stopped 2 years ago - but the men were pretty universally supportive. If not - he needs therapy.

I can't understand this one, your pelvis is (or should be) pretty solid and set by the time you give birth, so how can your hips change shape? or am I misunderstanding what you are saying?

the pubic symphysis permanently widens - so the bones DO move - do you really think a head would fit otherwise? progesterone relaxes everything, including ligaments (it is why it is much easier to get sprains etc whilst pregnant and is also the reason for heartburn and constipation early in pregnancy) so that something the size of a bowling ball can get squeezed out.

W/o going into too much detail I can't say I much care about the changes in my wife. There are much bigger things going on (like the kid!). And really, what sort of cad gets really worked up about that sort of thing when looking at the big picture? (although, I probably am somewhat lucky in that my wife lost almost all the weight pretty quickly).

Your feet may get bigger too, again, because the tendons stretch.

I was really worried when I found out I was pregnant figuring it would change me forever. Honestly after 3 kids my chest is for sure saggier- I would wear one of those night time wireless bras if I could do it again- my stomach isn't as tight but still flat but I weigh less now than ever before, I have more muscle, and I did not notice any change in my hips. My husband would say I am more fit now. I would keep active during pregnancy and I would listen to those who caution about running too soon after having the kids. 8 years later I had a PT tell me that one of the reasons my bike and hips are off is because I ran too soon and did not allow those tendons to go back to normal. I was the one doing the 5k race 6 weeks after birth with my last- so becareful on those types of things because you may get away with it now but it could come back to get you! Hope that helps!

My body did not change much. I was not a triathlete during the pregnancy/breastfeeding years. I was skinny with not much muscle tone. After my first child I lost the weight in about 2 months. I was kinda feaked out right after the birth though b/c your abd takes a few weeks to go down. The skin was really loose and bigger than I thought it would be. I had a girlfriend tell me that goes away quick so I felt better about that. And it did my abd looked the same as it did prepregnancy. After 4 months I actually lost even more weight so I weighed less than prepregnancy.

I worked part time and went to the gym on my days off. I worked out like a "normal person". A hour of cardio on my days off. I breastfed all my kids 9-15 months and I think that helps. I also had kids in my 20's which I think helps too. The same thing happened each time except for the last two I just went back to my prepregnancy weight. I actually weaned my last one at 14 months so I could get a boobjob. OOps wrong thread.

As far as my husband is concerned.Well he's an animal. HE loved my pregnant body and my postpartum body.

I guess my experience is a bit different than others. My body has changed after pregnancy. I now weigh 8 - 10 lbs less than pre-pregnancy, but I still have a saggy mid-section. Previously, I had nothing like that at all. I guess I'm just carrying the weight differently. I'm still not at an ideal weight, though (I've always been on the high side), so once I get rid of that then perhaps it will go away. DH has no problem with my body shape, in fact, just the opposite.

I'd have to say my ex wife didn't change much after the first birth but much more noticeably so after the second. She could never get back to her original size or weight after #2. A lot of women seem to notice more difference after more than one birth, or so I've been told.

In addition to the things already mentioned, my feet increased about 1/2 size per kid. Pre-kids, I was a size 8; now after 2 kids, I'm a solid 9.

I think you can't answer this question generally. It depends on how sensitive your body reacts to the pregnancy. I know a woman that lost all the weight in one month after the birth of her child. She did a lot of workout and also managed to get her stomach in top shape in no time. But that's not possible for everyone of course. But that's just cosmetic things, there are many more severe female health problems than body changes after pregnancy. If workout and training won't help, you can contact a doctor and maybe get some hormone treatment if necessary.

Not much. My core strength took a big hit though and took awhile to build back up... ran a marathon 10 months after baby

My ex wife looked about the same after the first child, but seemed to have wider hips, more stomach and 10 lbs that wouldn't go away after the second. I've heard other women say there are more changes with multiple pregnancies.
