LT testing
So I have the opportunity to do some lactate threshhold testing for relatively cheap. I have never done lactate testing and think it might help my training.

The drawback is that I know that I'm not in great shape right now because I'm coming back from a long injury - I did a 3-month 3x/week) boot camp over the summer and have been training about 5-7 hours/week (2x60 min swims, 2-3x45-80 min. bikes, 3-4x30-60 min jogs).

Is it worth it to get this testing done, or should I put it off until I'm in better shape? I have heard that finding your LT will help determine the proper training zones to build your aerobic base...but I don't know if it's worth it until I am fitter.

I guess I'm partly intimidated because I'm not overly confident in my athletic prowess at this time and going into a sport testing lab would be brand new to me - hopefully dude wouldn't kick me in the junk and tell me to get out when he sees how out of shape I am!!

Well, it seems like you want to study for the "test" by doing more training and "getting in better shape" before the test. I hear this all the time.

The fact is the test is going to TELL YOU what your weaknesses are and what you need to train.... or at least a coach should be able to interpret these test results are devise workouts for you that will only HELP improve your training over the next fw months.

I went in rather unfit for my first LT tests last Nov. Well, unfit by my standards, but the coach took the results and gave me some brutal workouts that improved my LT on the bike and run rather significantly in 6 months. I will admit, he had me doing stuff I never would have dreamed of in terms of intensity and length (both harder and easier), but the gains could not be denied. Perhaps my LT numbers would have improved on just on training alone, but who knows.

Anyhow, it's just a "snaphot of time" of your current fitness. there is no need to be intimidated by it. it's actually pretty fun and only really really hurts the last 3-5 minutes of the test.

I would do LT testing every season for sure...

An LT test just tells you where you are currently at so that you have a good idea of what zones you should be training at to get the most efficient/effective training. You need to keep this in mind when getting tested. It tells you nothing about your ultimate ability or potential. As long as you have the right mindset, it doesn't matter when you get tested. It is just a useful number for training. And that number will move throughout a season and throughout years of training. Might be fun to get your benchmark now and see how much improvement you make when you are actually "in shape"!

Yeah, the last few minutes absolutely fucking suck but the test is well worth it. If you have a chance to get a test for free, take it because they aren't cheap by any means.

What will you be doing? Cysling or running when they test your LT? It makes a difference...

Have some confidence in yourself and appreciation for your fitness level right now. So you're not in the best shape you could possibly be in - who is?

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.
