I need a cycling makeover
Now that I'm starting to ride again after essentially a few years off, I realized today that my cycling wardrobe is looking pretty bad. I was downright embarrassed today as I rolled out in knickers and a 10-year-old, bright lime green, 3 sizes too big jacket. I'm pretty sure I was the cycling version of 'mom jeans'.

Please help :) Need recs for hip, cool cycling clothes - jerseys, jacket, socks, etc. What are some of your favorites?

Thanks!

Glad you posted this cause I was thinking the same thing just this weekend. And after looking at what my local stores have, I am going to have to shop online.

I remember a while back that someone posted on ST (could have been in the main forum) a link to a company that sold super cute jerseys. I remember that several of them were kind of retro 50s styles (kind of like bowling shirts) and had cute designs like cats and cherries. Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about? I would love to buy a couple of jerseys from them.

Check out teamestrogen.com - they have tons of different jerseys. I also have picked up some from Colorado Cyclist and Sunrise Cyclery when they are running good deals. :)

Pearl Izumi has some cute stuff. Even better if you are near an outlet store. I wear my team kit pretty much exclusively now, so most of my other jerseys are sitting in the drawer.

I finally pulled the trigger on a Graham Watson jersey I'd been covetous of for over a year. Tour de France through the sunflowers...

Thanks for reminding me about team Estrogen.

In the same spirit, I bought a pair of 400 mile shorts from DeSoto Sports, and plan to see if they are really comfortable for the long rides in my future.

i just don't get it - why would you want to look like froufrou on the bike?

the girls i ride with wear sugoi, 2xu or de soto apparel. they all look like rock stars. more importantly, those three companies make quality stuff. great fabrics (breathability, minimal chafing, durable), great chamois (the girls have their preferences among those 3 companies in terms of the best chamois & chamois placement, but they all seem to have found what works best for them), etc.

I just don't get it - Why would you want to look like every other tri geek on the road? Different strokes for different folks.

Personally, I wear my team kit 99% of the time.

As I bust my a$$ to get in shape, I see my girl curves disappear. That said, feminine technical fabrics or my race kit are my apparel choices.

To specifically answer your question, I don't want to be mistaken for "one of the guys" any more than I already am.

most women i see wear the froufrou stuff, not the high-end/rock star stuff, so it's really the women wearing the high-end stuff that look distinctive ;P

my impression of women's apparel is that it does the opposite, and actually accentuates feminine physical attributes.

but then again, i find many gender bender girls attractive, so that may explain things a bit... ;)

Loved your mom jeans comment! SO funny! I second the bonktown recommendation. Download the firefox extension so you know as soon as new items are posted. They are great about having top quality women's cycling clothing on there for 50-75% off retail. I also LOVE Sierra Trading Post for high quality cycling gear CHEAP. My Exte Ondo jacket I got from Sierra is the BOMB!

Team Kit all the way. I joined a bike team just because it was the kit was one of my favorite brands (Louis Garneau) and I loved the way the it looked. Plain kits are boring! I also have kits from my favorite LBS.

Bonktown x3. They are part of backcountry.com, and Backcountry lists their cycling sales in addition to having them rotate through Bonktown. I got my current favorite jersey from Backcountry on sale for 35% off: a short-sleeved, full zip two-toned green Hincapie jersey. I am extremely pleased with both the fabric performance and the cut of the jersey -- the attention to design detail in the Hincapie gear is pretty evident.

The other piece of gear that has really been rocking my world for both performance and style is my Sugoi long-sleeved fleece jacket, and it's on sale at a lot of sites:

Love.love.love. I'm such a geek that I've been wearing it around as a jacket on weekends, it's so comfortable and flattering!

In terms of bottoms, I have both Pearl Izumi and Sugoi shorts that I love, and Terry fleecy tights and SheBeest knickers. There's a lot of good stuff out there, thankfully!
