Job Summary:
The position as Chemical Engineer is with the Operational Chemistry group of the Equipment Services Department (ESD). ESD is an engineering and technical support organization for the fossil electric generating plants at Consumers Energy and CMS Energy. The Operational Chemistry groups serves as an in-house consultant to provide chemistry and chemical engineering support in the areas of system chemistry control with an emphasis on water-steam cycle chemistry, including high purity water production, water treatment for corrosion/deposit control, and chemical cleaning. Other activities include fuel and furnace chemistry, flue gas conditioning, waste water treatment, and lubrication chemistry. The position will be filled at the highest level, depending on experience.
Department Specific Criteria:
Job activities will involve contact with numerous groups, including plant staff at various levels, engineering and environmental departments, the analytical lab, and outside vendors. The Operational Chemistry group establishes specifications and standards for the fossil generation plants with the goal of maximizing operational efficiency and reliability through reduced corrosion or deposition. As a consultant to the plants, customer service and communications are important. In addition, skills in leadership and teamwork are essential, along with the desire to continually learn and improve. The individual will be involved in reviewing chemistry data for adverse patterns or trends, recommending courses of action, and updating and implementing the Cycle Chemistry Improvement Plan. The ability to travel domestically is a must. Familiarity with a PC is essential, including basic software such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. A familiarity with the thermodynamic steam cycle is helpful.
