I was flipping through the channels yesterday and caught the end of the interview - I thought I recognized you! You speak on-camera very well, that must have been an unusual new skill to learn.

Great to see you up there!

My question is, Why use perfume at all? If it's not good for the fetus, it can't be good for the woman either...

Women's perfume, and men's aftershave/cologne products, just give me a headache. There is pretty compelling evidence that we shouldn't be using these products *at all*.

Essential oils are a nice alternative.

They called me sunday evening to do that one - I don't get much notice!!!

occasionally (rarely) I find out ahead of time.....I do find it funny that TV works that way, but it seems universal!

Great interview!

The girl seemed pretty quick to move along as soon as you mentioned penis size...

meanwhile EVERY guy I know picked up on that part!!!!

If Mike had done the interview instead of Juliet it would have actually gotten play - but I guess they wanted this to be more 'serious'.

Nice! I always wondered where they found the people for programs like that.

Is that your area of specialization? If so, any help on dealing with my mother and her unbelievable fear of plastics and cosmetics? For sixty years, all she's worn is lipstick and sunscreen. That's it. No other makeup. She was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. Pretty serious, as she was given a false negative six months prior to getting the correct positive. It was touch and go for awhile, but she's responded well to treatment.

Now she seems to take every email, news story and website to the nth degree. If she saw your news program she'd be calling everyone she knew and warning them against perfume because if it could hurt a male fetus in a pregnant rat then who knows what it might do to her. My dad and I are engineers. My mum is whatever is the exact opposite of an engineer. She has lots of strengths but I'm starting to realize that she doesn't "get" science or statistics. She doesn't have the ability to differentiate between Lexan, HDPE and LDPE so all plastics are bad. She also doesn't get that a 20% increase on the 1:10,000 probability is still pretty low odds.

Given what she's gone through, she's fully entitled to avoid microwaving in plastic, use nothing but Burt's Bees lip colour and spend $100 for 50mL of the correct sunscreen. That said, where is the voice of reason in all this? What are your thoughts?

Well your mum gets some points here. I agree on not microwaving in plastics. Hard plastic has BpA and soft plastics have phthalates - neither particularly good for ingestion.

Cosmetic products need further research - the phthalate issue is very real and we do not know the final consequences. The best information I have seen to date is collected by nottoopretty.org

the last 3 on that page actually resulted in my changing what I use 10 years ago. Your mum CAN use makeup if she looks at the products in the PDF that tested as phthalate free I would think those are ok....

I am with you on moderation - the problem is that no one knows what the cumulative effects of having higher than considered safe levels does.

So, when I have options of products without phthalates I get them. OTOH I get my hair colored, when I do go on TV I use the mousse etc that the hair stylist told me to use....

I have been using bottled water at the gym but just ordered a bunch of klean kanteens (made from stainless steel) instead for me and my boys....I do believe in trying to lessen our burden.

As to my specialty: Family and Integrative Medicine. The show has me come on every month or so on various topics.
