It is my understanding that this will increase my V02 Max by allowing me to maintain the 10k pace longer. I am running super long distances so I don't need to increase my 5k race pace, I need to be able to run at 163 HR for a longer distance.

ok, that makes sense. any run where you spend at least 20 min at equal to or greater than sixty percent of your vo2 max provides a stimulus for increasing vo2 max (I think those are the right #s), running vo2 max intervals where you're nearly working AT your vo2 max more so (but they hurt like hell...)
