Weekly "How'd You Do?" Thread 6/2/08

So, how'd you do this week? Take the opportunity to brag or complain about the past week with respect to reaching your goals. We especially want to hear about any great workouts or races that you did in the past week.

My week:
- much better than the week before; hit my run workouts and my running felt strong Smile
- controlled my eating and lost weight - down 1.2 lbs Smile
- still no biking; not good with AmZof looming just a few short months away Frown

Had a decent week training and an awful week in terms of nutrition. The past week's workout focus was recovery from the DATT. I managed to complete all of my workouts including a 8000 yards of swimming, semi-painful 30 minute run (it always takes me forever to recover when it comes to run) and a decent 63 mile bike/40 minute run brick. The bike of the brick was amazing and I was able to keep up with a friend who I always struggle to stay with which means my training must be working. The run portion of the brick kinda sucked as I was tired and very hot but I stuck it out.

I let my "you can eat whatever you want cause you finished the DATT" go on to long that by the end of the week my stomach just hurt. Trying to get back on track and refocus today. I have no idea why I get so slack with my nutrition. I feel great when I eat great and feel like crap when I eat bad yet I just keep eating bad.

This week is the mid-way point of my four long weekends of biking. I have the tour of the mississippi river valley (TOMRV) on Sat and Sun which is 112 miles on Sat and 88 on Sunday. Both rides will be the furthest I have ever ridden in my life. So goals for this week are to complete my weekday workouts and not to have too much of a mental breakdown this weekend.

Hope everyone has a great week!
Deanna

Raced 4 times!
Mon: crit (plus track workout)
Wed: track
Fri: track
Sat: crit
Sun: time trial

Friday track races I was able to hang in longer with the fast gals than I have in the past. Sunday's TT--went under my goal time by 3 minutes. Feel pretty good today.

Nutrition: So-so. Some very good days. One day where we had cake at work and lunch meetings. Not so good that day.

After nearly 6 weeks with no soda, I did have a Pepsi yesterday with lunch after my race.

Goal for this coming week: race twice on the track and work on positioning during races; get back to running!

Overall a pretty good week.

Goal 1 was to ride to work 3 out of 4 days, and I rode all 4, so A+
Goal 2 was to run 3/4 days which I did, so A
Goal 3 was to focus on nutrition. No birthday cake at work, but yesterday was FIL's birthday so I did have a piece of cake and ice cream.
Unexpected high point: ran 7 miles yesterday AM and then went to swim practice for an 800 TT. Thinking it was going to be bad because of lack of energy, I just decided to go for it, and ended up with a 1:04 minute PR--- yippee!

This week's goals:
Training: (we'll call it that even though I'm not training for anything now)- ride to work Wed-Fri (took mon, tues off), participate in Aquathon tonight, run wed-fri, ride with bike club Sun
Nutrition: continue to focus on fresh, unprocessed, unrefined foods, minimize sugar intake

Good luck to everyone!!

I was very good about stretching/foam roller, but my diet was terrible (there was a Coldstone type place with in walking distance of the condo) and then I gave myself a free day yesterday since I raced on Saturday and if I'm gonna get down to my race weight in October I need to start NOW! So as of today, I'm back on my training diet and I'm gonna start making it to Yoga this week.

My goals for 2008:

1. Listen to my body as I recover from December 07 Femoral Neck Stress Fracture. I listened! Legs were fried when I woke up for my long ride Saturday, figured a long soak in the tub and a day off was a much better idea.

2. Strength training and yoga at least 1/week each to prevent new injuries/re-injury. 1x strength training/plyos workout Friday morning

3. First Half Ironman- Pumpkinman in September

4. First marathon- NYC in November. On the way....longest run since injury this weekend, 8.2 miles, pain free.

5. Not worry about times for above two goal races for this season- keep focus on staying HEALTHY and INJURY free so I can set myself up for a strong 2009 season! Still not wearing a watch as I add the running miles...focusing on being strong and pain free, times will follow!

I am training for IMLP and I have Eagleman next week but IMLP is my "A" race so I ran 18 miles on Saturday and biked 70 miles yesterday.
At least the bike course was flat after last weekends century ride called Mountains of Misery.

Not a great week for me. Missed a few workouts early in the week - just wasn't motivated and the less said about my nutrition the better. BUT I managed to get my long run, long bike and an open water swim race done this weekend. My new goal for the week was to beat last years time at the swim race, which I did by approx 3 minutes. (I was hoping to shave a little more time off, but I placed myself really badly at the start and had to swim through some TNT craziness, and it took me forever to find my rhythm.)

I really wanted to blow off my long ride, but forced myself out there after the swim, even with the cloudy rainy weather. I ended up getting extremely lost at the end and had to have my husband come rescue me, so the ride was a few miles shy of what I wanted to do. But it was much better than the couch that was calling my name after the swim.

Thanks, ladies!

My week started out awesome, but took a major dive around friday afternoon.

Workouts: I got in not one, not two, but three 45 minute runs ...including one the night before an exam!!! The one swim I got in went well, as did the lifting and pilates sessions. I got nothing in on friday or the weekend, though :-(

Nutrition: The boy-toy moved an hour away to start law school two weeks ago, so keeping the fridge stocked with good, clean, yummy "chick-food" has been much easier; when he is home on the weekends is a different story. The first part of the week was pure perfection. However, the boy did Rock 'N RollMan, and the food the day before the race consisted of Dairy Queen, Papa Johns, cookies, candy, etc ...bad bad bad. I felt like crap for the rest of the weekend. I'm sure the massive feed-the-loneliness ice cream sundae I had last night when the boy left again for school didn't help :-\

Goals for this week:
-work out on at least 5 days
-keep the diet clean. This is going to be a challenge, and I have to drive 7 hours to my parents' and celebrate my sister's high school graduation. I tend to eat badly when I travel, and even worse when cake is involved.

On another note, I am totally new on The Womens, but I want to say THANK YOU to DawnT for these threads ...it is so motivating to hear about other girls' triumphs and to know I'm not alone in my training and nutrition slip-ups!!!

I did my first half iron distance event this week, and I barely survived. Very hot, hilly, and humid. Everything was lovely, until I got off my bike - then it was like doing hill repeats in an oven (and running is my best sport).. My grandiose goals went out the window and were replaced with 1) finish..2) without throwing up on spectators....3) or weeping. (I at least met those goals.) BAH! This gets easier, right?

Not a banner week for me. I'll give it a C.

I am worn through from my training. Luckily this weekend was my last push for CdA.

Ended up taking Mon. - Wed. completely off. I had several workouts in there that I missed but I just couldn't get off the couch. I am really really burnt out and struggling with some post even blues after my big training camp. It was really rough.

I got back into the swing of things after a nice OW swim on Thursday. I tried to get on the tmill to do the mile repeats I blew off earlier in the week. I did 4 half mile repeats then called it a day. Friday was much better. I got in the lake again and felt fantastic after 2000y and wanted to do more but couldn't convince anyone to stay out there with me.

Saturday I slept through a race. I'd signed up for it on a whim, a local sprint, just to give me something to look forward to. I woke up at 7:00 to my husband saying "No race today?". Argh!!! I really wanted to do it too. Ah well, I laid around and drank coffee instead. I did get in a solid 2 hour run sans HR monitor which was fun. More of a run than a training run.

Sunday was a very successful 80 mile ride which bumps my grade for the week up to a C from a D.

Nutrition wasn't great. A Ben and Jerry's ice cream at the ball game on Monday, too much pizza and a sundae on Thursday and a few cookies over the weekend.

My weight stayed the same at least!

No biking at all last week. My long ride that I had planned (60 mi) got rained out! Second Saturday in a row with T-storms. I am bumming. I need to get some mid-week rides in this week.

Swimming was awesome! OWS swim with snakes plus a couple of long pool swims and a Masters workout, too. A+

Did some running, mainly just to placate my doggie. Longest run was only 7 miles, but I did a whole bunch of short runs.

Eating was not so good. What is up with honey-wheat pretzels? I gave up chemical Pringles but am now on organic pretzels. Not good. Must stop.

Eh, not so great. I rode twice, swam once, and didn't run at all. It was just one of those weeks where life got in the way, but I think that's going to happen a lot now so I'll just keep trying! I rode with the bike club Tuesday night, my goal is just to stay with them a bit longer each time and I did that. My one swim was an open water 1-mile race, which turned out to be longer than a mile by some undetermined amount. The added distance plus it was very choppy and no wetsuit, so I was much slower than I expected to be. I think I have underestimated the wetsuit! It was fun, though.

Oh, and my eating was better last week, I was down about 2 pounds. Not bad!

So starting over today with the club ride tonight, I'll see how long I can hang on! Even the bad weeks aren't so bad, though, as I am doing much better than I did before we started all this. Having some clearly defined goals and people to report to is helping me, I think. So thanks!

Cathy: absatootly! I love the bike. Even on the worst hill, I'm still smiling. I'm a year out from my first mary and still singing the mantra of "one and done." One reason I think I'll never do an IM (well, never say never, heh, heh)

This week, Bah. gained a few lbs. I'm calling it Mopey May for me. But June has me back in a good mindset.

Plan this week: Well, no plan really. I start a 10 week speed training plan Sunday for what I call my "A" race so am just kinda winging it in a pressure free way :)

Day late but here's my recap....Last Weeks Goals...

1) Recover Mentally and Physically (onset of Heat Stroke) from the Half.
Mentally - SOOOO over it. Signed up for the Picton Half in Oct.
Physically - Soooo NOT over it.
Have an appt. with a internal specialist, have to go to the lab tomorrow for blood tests and p test.
Must watch how hot etc. I get while running/biking for the next while.
Grade: A

2) Improve eating habits and lose 1-2 pounds.
Ooh, I sucked at this. Had a 3 day pity party after the half, cleaned it up for 2 days then the weekend hit.
Grade - F

3) Follow my training schedule, improvise where needed due to weather
Didn't train a lot last week due to injuries, bailed on a cycling ride as it was hot and i was not feeling good.
Grade - C

4) Do something fun for ME. Not sure what but something not tri related.
My 6 yo nephew came for the weekend, we played, watched kid movies, mini golf, hershey factory, so I had fun.
Grade - B - didn't do anything stricly for 'ME'.

5) Research Heatstroke and how to prevent it from sucking the life out of me at a race!
Did. Done. Did. went to Dr's, more appts from that but learned not to race when hotter then hell out and to watch for signs of HS and STOP.

THIS WEEK......

1) GET ON THE BIKE.
Peterborough Half IM is looming and I need some more mileage. Which shouldn't be too hard....I just got a brand new Madone :)

2) SWIM
I can go hard in the pool so I plan on doing lots of hard workouts this week - at least 3.

3) DIET
improve - cut out the junk, one little treat/day, like those 100 calorie thin bars - just enough to satisfy without inhaling the whole box!

4) Do something fun. for me.

5) Volunteer at local race on weekend.

Kudo's to all for their great weeks. keep up the great work, you're all inspiring!

Well, a little late in posting, better late than never...

Probably give myself a B- for overall.

In terms of workout/training stuff, B+
Did all workouts, some were switched around, a few substitute things. Still trying to learn when is it "okay" to switch/substitute and when should I really push myself. Does that make sense?
Did NOT do core and only stretched a little.

In terms of eating "healthy" was okay till weekend. With family, ate all kinds of things maybe not so good for me but they sure tasted good! C grade for that

My first 2 years of training (past 2) I lost 30 pounds - have gained 8-9 back. It's seeming really hard to lose them. I am starting to notice that they do make a difference - new clothes are not as loose, etc. Have to figure out what to do. I like eating too much.

This week, again, do all workouts, OH and notice negative self-talk. It was bad today in my morning group brick. The negative self-talk that is.
Also eat better, fruits/grains/etc with only ONE day of "free" eating, not three.
AND do core/stretch 3 times.

This is very very helpful, thanks again.

Mindy
