Wellbutrin?
I'll probably post in LR, too...but will start in a kinder gentler place, first... :p

I just got back from my annual med review with my Crazy Doctor. He says that it sounds like the Lexapro I am on is helping with the anxiety/OCD/panic, but would like to add in a very, very low dose of Wellbutrin to give me back some energy and sex drive. So let's chat about Wellbutrin, shall we? Anyone on it? Can I drink on it? (I do drink with my Lexapro--although when I take my klonopin/lorazepam I don't) Will it make me all jazz hands? Will I actually have a sex drive again?

I've been on the Lexapro now for two years...I tend to have strong reactions to drugs--runs in the family--and it took a while to adjust to it, but am tolerating it well now. Except for it doesn't ENTIRELY control the depression (although is great for the anxiety/panic and OCD--which were REALLY what was killing me), and like I pointed out...obliterated my sex drive. I am wondering is it worth adding the Wellbutrin to try for 100%...or should I stick to "not so bad" with just the lexapro alone...?

To clarify, he's looking at the Wellbutrin to give me back some energy, and to give me back a sex drive. I'm not ELIMINATING the Lexapro. My main concerns are that the Wellbutrin will make me twitchy, and that I can't drink on it. I do love my beer and wine, and I'd really hate to give it up (like I said, I have no problems with it on the LExapro).

What did your doctor say to all these concerns?

I have tried both Lexapro and Wellbutrin, but never at the same time. I really really felt that Lexapro helped, but I had a few problems with nausea and constipation. My doctor recommended a switch to Wellbutrin and it was a HUGE mistake. As you mentioned, it does seem to "jazz" my energy levels, but for me, that nice side effect was only temporary (less than a month). The major problem was the fact that it made me a complete emotional wreck and even more depressed than before I had started taking Lexapro. I stuck it out for a couple of months with the hopes that things would get better but they didn't so I'm back on the Lexapro and never been happier. It's hard to say what the combination of both would do or how your body/mind would tolerate the Wellbutrin, but I personally would never go back to Wellbutrin....

He said there's no way to know what side effects you have, until you take it. Yes, it can help your sex drive--but nothing is 100%.

Yes, you can drink (but no, it says you shouldn't), but don't go bananas.

And I can't tell you what to do.

Hi,
You might ask him about using Mirapex for increasing sex drive; I'm on it (for restless leg syndrome) and it has that effect. From what I've read, it is commonly prescribed for this reason to those on antidepressants.

I'm not a huge drinker, but I really didn't notice any problems with this on either Lexapro or Wellbutrin. As far as the sex drive is concerned, I do notice that it is a little lower on Lexapro than on Wellbutrin but not enough to cause any problems. One side effect of Wellbutrin that I did like was the fact that it curbed the intense carb cravings I would get after massive amounts of training. Apparently they were trying to market Wellbutrin as a weight loss drug for a while since so many people observed the same effect and were able to drop a few pounds.

it is very common to add wellbutrin in to counteract the sexual dysfunction from ssri's - I do it all the time.....
try it, you will know quickly how it is going to affect you....

I've been off the anti-depressants for a few years, but back in the day they put me on Wellbutrin in combo with Lexapro for pretty much the exact same reasons. The Wellbutrin did a good job of reducing the sort of distancing effect the Lexapro had on me. I can't say it completely fixed everything, but was definitely an improvement. I had a lot more energy and the sex drive improved (not 100%, but much better than on the Lexapro... )

I'd say give it a try for sure.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Figuring out meds/sex drive can be frustrating!

I just have to tease you as the first thought when I read your post was: well, yeah, she's married to a teenager so I'm sure he wants to have sex all the time ;-)

Ask your doc about EMSAM. It is a patch. I am on it and it has worked better than Wellbutrin, Prozac, or Zoloft. There is no weight gain with it either,, which was important to me-not for vanity's sake but because I don't want to have to carry extra poundage on my bike or while I'm running.

Are there any known side effects of Wellbutrin on aerobic capacity? I'm switching between Lexapro and Wellbutrin right now, tapered for two weeks and have been Lexapro free for two weeks. I can't seem to catch my breath when I'm exercising. I even seem to feel a little out of breath when going up stairs. I also feel a bit light headed but that has gotten better this week.

Is a change in aerobic capacity a known issue or am I just weird?

Maybe but everything else feels fine. No sinus twinges, no achiness. But, I also haven't been sleeping well all week. I'm starting to question whether switching to Wellbutrin was the right decision.

I have not had any of those problems with Wellbutrin. It does make me a bit clumsy when I first start taking it, but other than that I have no side effects. Give it another week or two before you make a decision. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wellbutrin, and only spent one AWFUL week on Lexapro (spent that entire week on the couch sleeping), but these things work differently for everyone.
Are you on 150 or 300? Maybe if you are on 300 you can go down to 150 for a week and see if your symptoms change.

get your lungs checked....

but why did you go OFF the lexapro?? I often boost lexapro with low doses of wellbutrin in patients....

if you were responding to lexapro I probably would not have switched to wellbutrin....they work VERY differently.

I've been on Lexapro off and on for 3 years now. I like it, but I haven't tried anything else. I've heard fewer bad things about Lexapro and more good things compared to Wellbutrin, but as everyone else has said, these affect people differently. Lexapro works really quickly on me and I really haven't had too many side effects besides anorgasmia which is actually probably a benefit in my case. ;-) I didn't notice any weight gain or cardio capacity impairment when on Lexapro compared to being off of Lexapro. No constipation because I eat more than enough fiber. I think I might have suffered from a bit of lightheadedness when I first got on it but I can't remember clearly. I'm on a 20mg dose right now. I eventually want to get off of it for good, but I'm working on changing the biggest factor for my issues (my job).
