1983 Cape Cod Endurance Triathlon
Held almost 25 years ago, this was a full Ironman distance triathlon held on the Cape. It lasted for 6 years until it moved to New Hampshire for a couple more years. BAA Marathon race director Dave McGillivray helped introduce triathlon to the Northeast crowd. You can get an idea of what racing what like back then by a bunch of people who had little idea of what a triathlon was and certainly we didn't know how to train or race one! It was a lot of fun though!

I did this race in 1988; my first IM and, as it turned out, my IM PR.

I enjoyed the pure simplicity of the race course; single loops for all three legs, and then the fantastic feed put on by the funky restaurant across the street from the transition area.

I did the Endurance in '90(my 1st IM) and '91 when it was held in NH. Great location and race. The local people were really nice. That was one of my favorite races. The run had a major climb to the finish. Whew!

I did the Cape Cod race in 84, It was great seeing that race and the old days. I miss that about our sport sometimes. The races are now so packaged and that is ok but the personality of the sport is in those old school events.

That was my first IM. I remember the swim having plenty of jellyfish in it and it being long. George Missalaidis came out in an hour and he was a good college swimmer. We trained together for that race and had chocolate sheet cake at the pre race meal. I had little to eat that day and at the run turn around, at the garbage truck depot, took a few hands of M&M's. THere was a nice field on the way back in so I laid there and took a nap while trying to settle my stomach. Right out of a movie, I was russled up by a few nice old grandmotherly ladies who have been playing cards in that field for years. They gave me a sandwich and I was on my way.

I did the next three or four as well. I miss those simple good old days.

I know they say in the video that this was Ironman distance but it doesn't seem like it could have been. The video also says that the winner finished in 6 hours 19 minutes and 3 seconds (part 4, about 1 minute in)

It was great seeing that video, brings back lots of memories of old school racing, And I believe that the 6 hour and 19 minute reference is to the bike split, not overall time, or it could be the bike and swim split together...And how hot is the announcer chick, her name sounds familiar to me, does anyone know her story???

Robin Young is still on the radio. She works for the NPR station in Boston

I have a pretty tangential, basically-unrelated question here that I'm hoping someone might be able to answer. In part 5 of this video at 3:17 in, they show some scenes and play some instrumental music that I KNOW I have heard before. I think it's from an older movie (1970s-ish movie) but I can't remember for the life of me what it was. They only play it for about 20 seconds.

Does anyone with way too much free time on their hands want to take a shot this?

I was thinking the same thing, I wish you could capture that type of feeling in events these days, or maybe I havent found the right events for me.

The emotions displayed are like little kids at Chirstmas, just pure joy!, raw joy.

Oh don't post things like that! All I could think of today was that race! I gave up triathlons after the 1987 CCET and have only done a handful since then, but I always thought if they brought the CCET back then I would have to do it. I had that "thrill" all day after seeing this posted in the morning. I told my wife and she is getting nervous.

Or maybe I should just stick with the wonderful memories that I have!

I wrote a bit about the 1983 race in my blog today.

After a day of having this music go through my head, I finally realized it was some of the interlude music from Chariots of Fire.
