chlorine destroyed the fungus amongus
Womens-

I went to a swim clinic that featured being in the pool for 7.5 hours over two consecutive days (broken into four sessions). Now something is a little "off" shall we say and vagisil ain't cutting it. I am eating yogurt in an effort to restore the bacterial balance. Has anyone ever had this happen? What did you do to get things back on track?

It may just be a skin irritation. When I was a teen and would swim practically every day I got a skin irritation in that area. As I recall, it resolved on its own by not getting in the pool. Maybe the doc has some nice soothing creme. You have my sympathy.

if your post is code for a yeast infection, take diflucan. i think you need a perscrption for it, but one pill knocks it out and gets you back in balance. for mild ones, i use the monostat suppositories, those are pretty good too.

boric acid works well and there are no yeast resistant to it (unlike monistat, diflucan etc). yes the same boric acid used to kill roaches.
you can put it into gel caps and insert.....

works great

I don't think vagisil will kill the yeast. Try OTC Monistat or the Diflucan like KC said. You do have to get a rx from your Dr. I try to keep one on hand for emergencies.

Not sure if it is yeast or what. Just badness. But not as bad as a yeast infection or UTI. But if it persists, I will try the yeast treatment. I am not about to stick roach poison anywhere near there, but all the more power to the chick that did. You are more punk than me.

I am a doc and see more resistant yeast than you want to know about.
and yes we tell women to use boric acid.
for those who don't want to make their own caps I have the compounding pharmacy do it. but believe it or not it is a WHOLE lot less toxic than monistat or diflucan!

if you are just uncomfortable then try calendula - get the dried flowers (marigolds) and make a tea - not to drink, to either sit in (like a bath) or soak a cloth and put it on your privates - will calm the region down.

I found some stuff in the "yeast aisle" at Rite Aid. Pretty sure it is called Nature's Way, or something similar. It's a 30 day supply of little white pills (that you take orally) and it is supposed to maintain "balance". I just pop one for a couple days if I feel like there might be trouble brewing.

boric acid gave me a bad burning sensation...if you try it and get that symptom, toss it.

what about wrapping a clove of garlic in gauze?
a friend of mine did that when she was in a Bolivia, she said it worked quickly and effectively, results within several hours.!

also i like your calendula suggestion, it tickles me happy when a doc makes effort for remedies like that! :)

I'm really thankful to have come across this question in the forum, and even more so for the Doctor's great advice. I have not experienced many yeast infections in my 35 years. However, this year I have had a few. Of some concer are the past two months. During the week leading up to my period, I have experienced the symptoms "squesen" mentioned. Last month, it did appear to be a yeast infection and I treated it with Monistat. This time, the irritation was less and though I was uncomfortable, I made it through the last week without the complete Monistat treatment regimine (I did resort to using the external creme, 2x per day, for the past four days). Today, two days before my period, I once again feel fine.

In my case, does this sound like chlorine irritation? Or is this hormonally induced? If so, could this irritation become part of my "PMS"? If this is a new symptom before each one of my periods, what would you suggest for coping with it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

really common to get itchy and yeast like symptoms before menses - hormonally related - drop in estrogen....
chlorine can exacerbate that.
the calendula mentioned above (steep like a tea....use externally) might help.

make sure you are using detergent free of dye and perfume (all free and clear and cheer free are the friendliest to girlie parts). the chlorine could be making you sensitive to any additives....

if it persists see your doc...

good luck

Thanks, Cat! I appreciate the advice. Next month, if this should happen again (fingers crossed it doesn't!), I'll definitely give the calendula a try, and make an appointment to see my doc. The suggestions for the dye and perfume free detergents sound great too.

Your local compounding pharmacy will have both the boric acid and the capsules available.
